Sarah Palin's opposition to bar crackdown surprised some (Trib complains she's not a religious nut)

Sarah Palin may be the heroine of the religious right, but Rev. Gene Straatmeyer vividly recalls a public run-in he once had with the now Republican vice presidential candidate over clergy support for a crackdown on bars. It was August 1996, just weeks before Palin's election as mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska. And Straatmeyer, a local Presbyterian minister and head of two church coalitions, testified at a City Council hearing for a measure to shorten the traditional 5 a.m. last call by a few hours.

Of course, if she had voted to reduce the bars' hours, we'd be reading an article about how she imposed her evangelical temperance on the citizens of Wasilla. Strangely enough, the reporters don't mention any names when it comes to the theory a lot of the drunken drivers are from Anchorage. They don't even mention what time the bars close there. Nor do they quote any DUI statistics from similar sized Alaskan towns with shorter bar hours. Oddly enough, if Sarah sold her soul for a campaign contribution from the bar owners, wouldn't she make sure the DUI arrests went down? And I can understand how people who drive to bars contribute to drunken driving, but how does that affect spousal abuse? If the bars close at 3, the abusive husband can still go home, drink more and beat his wife.

“Of course, if she had voted to reduce the bars’ hours, we’d be reading an article about how she imposed her evangelical temperance on the citizens of Wasilla.”

Exactly. She chose the correct path IMO. She let the bars make the decision. Pro-business, pro-freedom. Exactly as it should be.

People drink in Alaska?

I thought Alaska was a right wing Christian Theocracy (at least that’s what they told me at DK and DU).

Well, Governor Palin shot down in flames another myth: that normal people who take their religion and moral standards seriously, neither have to wear their religion on their sleeve, nor lose sight of the fact that, in our system, the religious and secular universes can coexist, separately and peacefully, thankyouverymuch!

She really does keep her religious views to herself and doesn’t allow them to interfere with her governance.

This is called “rational thought”. You can hold religion in your heart and accept and believe that your religious beliefs don’t belong imposing on the freedom of others.

That is an idea the left just cannot grasp.

That's because their liberalism is their religion.

You know I know a local minister who is a big religious conservative and he had a disagreement with our secularist mayor about banning alcohol on the Boise river, with the miniister believing it should be legal to drink and the liberal mayor disagreeing.

The left has no feel for faith and I presume they think we conservatives are shallow and pious. But what they don’t get is that we are certainly against killing babies and redefining marriage. Sara Palin is a rock and very gifted and reasonable. Unlike Obama who is a fake and a fraud pretending to be religious, but liberals know that, which is why they accept him and reject Sara.

Yes, indeed. A conservative does not “crackdown” on bars. That is something a Social-Engineering-Nanny-Stater does. Thank heavens Sarah Palin knows the difference between the two!

I may never stop being amazed at how these hit pieces evaporated for a week or so. I guess she really did win the debate.

Of course you mean we can live peacefully, but unfortunately liberals can't do that because they are so filled with hatred towards the religious right.
