Death with dignity: approve I-1000 (Seattle Times favors assisted suicide)
Seattle Times ^ | 10/5/08 | Seattle Times

The "death with dignity" measure, Initiative 1000, sets up a way for a terminally ill person to order a lethal dose of drugs. Make no mistake: This is assisted suicide. It is a grim decision, and many may think it a wrong one, but we believe it should be the right of the terminally ill to decide for themselves.

The law would give the right to only a few people: patients who have fewer than six months to live. In Oregon, the only state to have a comparable law, 49 patients used the law to take their lives last year — fewer than 2 in every 1,000 deaths in the state. They were patients with cancer, Lou Gehrig's disease and other terrible conditions. Some took their lives because of pain, but most often because they were losing their autonomy, their dignity and their engagement with life.

And the beauty of it is that even if this passes and people “off” themselves, they’ll still be able to vote a straight democrat party ticket from now until doom’s day.

The Culture of Death rolls on.

As an aside: This type of law will keep lawyers busy for the next 1000 years i.e. injunctions, will contests, undue influence, the bribing of doctors to get grandma out of the way. etc. etc.

“Death with dignity”, since it is a chant by those who wish to end life, has always rankled me. The dignity is in how death is accepted not in how it occurs. A Jewish grandmother going into the gas chamber with her head held high and eyes straight forward was definitely a “death with dignity”.

I couldn't agree more.

Under the culture of death's logic Hitler died with dignity because he dressed in his finest uniform and ended his life as he chose; by contrast, Jesus Christ, beaten, bloodied and nailed to His Cross for our sins somehow lacked dignity.

This happens all the time in hospital conditions.

You’re pumped full of so much morphine, your organs slowly shut down.

You’re given pure oxygen until your lungs fry out.

Your *loved ones* pull the plug because they can’t stand to see you suffer or because there’s no hope of recovery.

IMO, equating death from disease or horrible accident to abortion is a misnomer.

Would our God really want us to unnecessarily suffer?

Strongly disagree. If someone has a painful, terminal cancer, why should we insist that they endure a terrible suffering? It seems like torture to me.

I also understand the slippery slope of “right to die” going to “duty to die”, but in Oregon that has not been the case - and they’re full of crazy libs.

We have made incredible advances with palliative care.

Making laws to benefit the lawyers is often the driving force behind such outlandish rulings.

“We have made incredible advances with palliative care.”

Assuming we have the insurance or savings to make it last. The financial costs quickly become an issue, adding to the suffering of the family.

Palliative care for the dying is often done in the home and the cost (which is minimal) is paid for by Medicare or other insurance.

Or are you suggesting that death should become mandatory based upon ability to pay?

You're talking about Hospice. I was referring to hospital stays.

“Or are you suggesting that death should become mandatory based upon ability to pay?”

Not at all. Some medical facilities have no problem bleeding you for every dollar although, in my Sister's case, when it became evident our choices were slim, they offered experimental treatments at no cost to us.

“Some took their lives because of pain, but most often because they were losing their autonomy, their dignity and their engagement with life.”

I read a book about assisted suicide some years ago - can’t remember the author, you’d know him. The conclusion was that most people who want to take their lives, solo or with a doctor’s assistance, do so NOT because of pain. They just want to have utter control over their lives. It’s a control freak issue most of the time. (As in, “I’m God, not You!”)

I’ve been around death a number of times and when death is close the person generally does not want to eat, and then does not want to drink, as the body cannot even process nutrition or fluids any more. The body gradually shuts down, and with some pain medication (sometimes not even necessary) the end of physical life can be - in the right atmosphere - very peaceful and often an incredible spiritual experience. Of course, if someone has no faith in life after death and God’s protection, that’s another thing entirely.

But a person can voluntarily choose to end their life any time, and the laws promoting or allowing doctor assisted suicde are just a cop-out for those who want to commit suicide by getting the medical stamp of approval. Add to that the leftists’ love of death, leading to the getting rid of useless eaters - such laws are abominable.
