Exclusive: Obama to hit McCain on Keating scandal
Politico ^

Posted on 10/05/2008 7:37:18 PM PDT by Chet 99

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.

Pushing back against what it calls “guilt-by-association” tactics by McCain, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, that will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.

The Obama campaign, including its surrogates appearing on radio and television, will argue that the deregulatory fervor that caused massive, cascading savings-and-loan collapses in the last ‘80s was pursued by McCain throughout his career, and helped cause the current credit crisis.

Yes AND he apologized to the country for any sign of impropriety AND he led a number of campaigns to get rid of the same sort of bribes.

If Obama goes after McCain on this, Obama may end up with egg on his face.

McCain...PLEASE GROW A SET OF TESTICLES.

Unless you counterattack with Obama’s much more recent involvement with Raines, Fannie, Ayers, and the large donations he got from several financial organizations, this WILL STICK.

Why doesn’t McCain go on the offensive with the Keating “scandal?” or is it better to at least act like he’s hiding info?

You mean the Democrats scandal with Fanny and Freddie that caused a domino reaction across the board on wall street?

You need to get off the ship of doom, or just get out of the way.

You just wrote the lines JM needs to say to defend himself...the key is that on addition to himself, Glenn, a Dimm, was found not guilty as well.

ONE THIRD spent discussing Ayers type issues and TWO THIRDS economic, domestic and foreign policy issues is a good mix. It worked very well for us in 2000 (despite democrat voter fraud) and in 2002. We need to return to this recipe. McCain needs to sell America his policies much better from now until election day. He must tell America WHY his are better and also WHY Obama’s will not succeed and actually hurt this country.

And, when profiling McCain, one must feel obliged to mention those billion-dollar savings and loan Senatorial skeletons, who, along with McCain, comprised the Keating Five: Alan Cranston (D-CA); Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ); John Glenn (D-OH); and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (D-MI). Note, four Democrats and one Republican? In doing so, however, we must also note that Robert Bennett, Chief Counsel to the Democrats during the investigation, said that McCain should not be included in the investigation and that their was not evidence of any wrongdoing by Senator McCain.

How's this for a response?

"Senator Obama, my association with Charles Keating was an unfortunate mistake in my personal judgment, very earlier in my career in the Senate, 20 years ago when I was much younger. Even though I was an inexperienced Senator at the time, just learning how Washington worked, I should have listened to my inner voice and followed my personal instincts instead of playing Washington's political game. I've sense gained a great deal of experience, and learned never to compromise my principles. And that's why we shouldn't entrust the Presidency to 47-year-old Senators with very limited experience to run this country!"

it only works if McCain plays this right....he’s got to not only hit hard with ayers but hit harder with Johnson/Fannie Mae/campaign contributions/economic advisor....

of course- THIS SHOULD’VE BEEN DONE TWO WEEKS AGO!!!!!

Well, ya just knew this was coming. I expected them to hold off until late in Oct with the Keating 5 stuff. This is why the MSM pushed so hard for McCain last year—they knew this was waiting in the wings. This & stories of his temper.

The facts are not on his side. McCain was one of two senators completely acquitted.he facts are not on his side. McCain was one of two senators completely acquitted.

As if the MSM cared about facts. That is the problem. All the lies will be out before any defense comes out...or is this a Br'er Rabbit thing again?

Fair’s fair. Let’s hear about Ayers and Obama’s funding fraud, as well as his various lies about accepting public funds and his pork proposals for the ‘corruption-free political sphere’ of Chicago.
