Britain to Spy On Every Call, Email and Text

Monday, October 6, 2008 5:10 PM

A top secret program being developed by British spymasters soon may allow them to snoop on every computer, text message and phone call in the United Kingdom, according to plans revealed this week.

The program — called the Interception Modernization Program — is part of a $20 billion effort being pushed by GCHQ, the government’s secret eavesdropping agency, according to the Times of London. It would easily be the largest surveillance system ever created in Britain, and quite possibly any Western democracy.

The British already have a sophisticated closed-circuit TV (CCTV) system that covers large metropolitan areas of the country. The linked system of cameras with full pan, tilt, zoom and infrared capability allows continuous surveillance in central business districts.

A few years ago, an uber-lib friend and I were having a very friendly discussion on why Europe sucks, and one of my arguments was that none of the European countries she so treasured featured a Bill of Rights. She scoffed and said they have ALL the rights (and more) than we do.

OK, sweetie. Love ya. Whatever you say.

Sadly, though, she was only a few years wrong.

According to the “Black Helicopter” set, this has been going on in this country since, at least, 9/11. ;-)

The only thing left to do is place a camera in every bedroom, and toilet bowl.

The UK must be full of limp wristed cowards with nary a Braveheart among them!

Where are the heroes of old?

Ours are stationed in Iraq while Bush’s open borders are violated daily by people who mean to do us harm.

Take that, ‘Homeland Security’!

Do you have a direct link to the story?

Everyone should watch the new UK Masterpiece Theatre drama The Last Enemy on PBS. It deals exactly with this subject.

I recall saying at the time of the kerfuffle over “warrantless eavesdropping”, that the policy of monitoring communications crossing the national boundary was nothing more than what every other capable country in the world did, including Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britian and France. (Remember in the U.S. they only targeted international traffic with suspected terrorists. Some of the communications neither began nor terminated in the U.S., merely transited it. The trial lawyers saw a payday in class action lawsuits.)

The British have the best system in the world to cow their subjects. They let the animal-humans run loose and terrorize and kill the population. Then they have cameras and other surveillance equipment to make the police jobs easier. No need to protect, just prosecute.

And of course if there wasn't a camera, well the crime never did really happen, did it?

I think we are past the awkward stage. History shows us that leaders are best managed directly.
