Here's what Obama needed to do tonight: Convince the country that he was an utterly safe, conventional, centrist politician who may have leftward leanings but will do the right thing when the crunch comes.

McCain explained very carefully in the beginning that you have to examine the record as well as listen to the rhetoric before you decide. I think he should have closed with a with a reminder of that key point.

Obama sounds very reasonable but his record does not support him.

"With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing"
You didn't miss a thing. This was depressing to watch and I'm seriously worried that we're headed for 4 years living under this fascist liberal extremist and his clan

"Shut up, McCarthy! Have a little discipline to use brain before opening mouth."
So you think McCarthy is giving up some National Security secret here by stating the obvious? As much as I wish it were otherwise, and I most certainly wish it were, it is what it is. McCain's performance tonight was so lame as to be either intentionally throwing the election or haplessly incompetent, you can choose between the two, but it's one of those.

All we have left is for Palin to win this in spite of McCain, because Johnny's doing nothing for his own cause.

I hope McCain has a plan becasue I didnt see it tonight...FWIW, the Obaminals will open up a more solid lead unless someone starts to unload like Palin has been doing and the 527’s.....something!

I didn’t like the format of the debate. I thought the questions were too filtered down. McCain did well once he settled down. Obama talked in circles. However, I wish the people had more freedom in their questions, and that McCain would have gone after him more.

I don’t care, this kind of whining is ridiculous, self-absorbed and counter productive.

Fred Thompson would have torn al'dumbo a new elephant trunk. Obama was the tied up goat waiting for the predator. McCain sniffed, started to pounce, then fell asleep in his tracks.

McCain sucked tonight.
Obama stunk, as usual.

This was one boring debate and McCain did himself no good.

Karl Rove and Charles Krauthammer are not chopped liver.

They both came out and said McCain did well and, more importantly, pointed to several ways in which McCain laid the groundwork to take over the discussion in the days ahead.

Now I’m waiting to see what Dick Morris says. Everyone else is just talking points garbage.

I just went and checked, and the post IS from Andy McCarthy, a regular contributor to NR and a generally solid conservative. He may be wrong on whether McCain is dead or not, but he makes some valid points about what McCain has to do to win this thing.

He even said he would force the loans to be rewritten on the homes BASED ON THE CURRENT PRICE OF THE HOME, COUPLED WITH LOW, FIXED RATE APR.

So, if you had a $1,000,000 adjustable rate and the home is now worth $300,000, either the bank or the government would lose $700,000 in cash to help this person (possible one of 5 million illegals) keep their home.

That's McLame.

I heard Obama say he would fine me if my kids don’t have health insurance.

I heard him say I’d get fined if I don’t get health insurance for my small business employees.

I heard him say we shouldn’t take our kid to the ER for an asthma attack.

He said he’d sit down with loonie dictators without preconditions.

I learned he’ll announce his military plans prior to implementing them.

I heard him say we need more regulation of the economy.

I heard he planned to consult his proud American wife Michelle if he didn’t know something.

I heard he votes straight party line.

He voted for every tax increase that came up, while pushing some idea of lowering taxes.

I heard he considers health care a right. A RIGHT. Like, the right to assemble or bear arms.

On McCain’s end, I heard he wanted to buy up and re-negotiate mortgages on houses that have dipped heavily in value.

McCain also listed by name non-partisan watchdog groups for those who don’t just want to listen to rhetoric.

So no, I don’t think Obama came off as a centrist.

I agree with you para-ord.45.
Seemed like McCain was not fully in the game.
He lost several opportunities to SLAM Obama with what Obama had just said. Didn’t happen.

McCain stuck to his script.
Pretty conservative approach - I guess thats why I see so many comments on how the debate was “boring”.

By the way, got a couple ParaOrd .45s myself.

Horrible choice of an article to post, any conservative who writes this kind of stuff should be required to wear a skirt.

As I’ve said before, I don’t want Obama to win, so I’ll vote for McCain. But do I think a McCain Presidency will be an easy thing to take, heck no, it’s going to be frsutrating most of the time.

I agree. Obama cannot win. Obama stinks, and McCain stinks, but McCain stinks less, and at least he has a decent running mate. One thing I'm getting sick and tired of is the idiot child faction here on FR who runs around and whines about McCain's socialism, and who then act like they want to get Obama elected so he can take us down the path faster.
