WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Thursday's CNN/USA Today/Gallup tracking poll indicates that Vice President Al Gore may be opening a solid lead over Texas Gov. George W. Bush, after nearly two weeks of neck-and-neck competition. Today's figures -- 51 percent for Gore to 40 percent for Bush -- represents a significant margin for the vice president.

This would make me feel better if we didn’t have so many factors running against Mccain right now such as the economy and the stupidity of the American people.

Does anyone have the Kerry/Bush polls? They would be more telling I believe since Bush won handily.

That’s nice and all...but gallup was REALLY erratic then...just 4 days after this (I think) it had Bush up by 8...it’s been a consistent significant lead for Obama for quite a while now...that worries me...

” . . . so many factors running against Mccain right now. . . .”

What is also running against McCain right now is the most radical, phoniest candidate even nominated by a major party, with baggage and more baggage: Ayers, Rezko, Odinga, Iraq, ACORN, citizenship, foreign funds, Wright, Fannie/Freddie, Socialist NP, etc., etc. And Biden.

Actually, Bush/Kerry wouldn't be more telling...as Bush was an incumbent, and Bush/Gore is a better comparison.

Thank you for putting things in perspective. However, I wish it were GWB running instead of McCain.

As Ann Coulter correctly said last night, all of these polls since 1976 have incorrectly claimed that the ‘Rats are favored.

And as any HS statistics student can confirm,
you can get any poll to state whatever you want.

The only poll that matters is the 11/4 election.

And come 11/4, Obama will lose and his “15 mins.” will be up and he can go back to Chi-town and lay his line of Socialist BS on the folks back there.

Relax, folks, Obama has two chances of winning on 11/4;
slim & none and “Slim” just left the building. LOL

Heck, even the Clintons & the Clintonistas aren’t gonna vote for this clown. It ruins Hillary’s plan to run in 2012 if Obama is elected POTUS.

And if the GOP doesn’t “drop a bomb” on this guy before the election,
the Clintons will!

No, we should read the polls, with their two and three point differences, and just stay home and not vote. We should just give up, that's what they want, why not be kind and make it easy for them? Heck, they're trying to help us, don't you know, give us a rationalisation and an excuse for just forgetting the whole thing and doing what we want, instead of all that drudgery and inconvenience of going to vote.

This is somewhat encouraging I guess. Shows that races can be very volatile. Funny how the memory works though. I didn’t recall Gore being up by this much in any poll. I thought Bush was almost always ahead and didn’t start losing badly until the final week, especially with that DUI story. I see I was wrong.

Didn’t Bush gain some ground though after that debate where Gore sighed and came off badly? I seem to recall Bush was ahead in several polls after that and held steady until around the final week where it became very close again.

Gore did not have angry, “cheated” PUMAs out to maul him...Nor was there any reason to suspect people lied about intending to vote for him (Bradley-Wilder Effect...And BHO makes algore look like a moderate. Hopeful signs?

Gore did win the popular vote, so technically any national poll that showed him winning was accurate, although the margin would be in question.
