Many convicted felons remain on voter rolls

Gee. I wonder who those who have no respect for the laws of this country support?

If they can own a gun, they can vote, and vice-versa. NO DOUBLE STANDARDS!

Um. Why are their registrations being honored? They should be shredded and their names removed from any database. Right?

Henderson served about a year in prison in the late 1990s for battery and trafficking in cocaine. He said he was unaware he needed to formally apply to restore his rights when he successfully registered to vote in 2002. Henderson has since cast ballots in at least six elections and received three updated voter ID cards from the Broward Supervisor of Elections Office, records show.

Broward elections officials were unaware of Henderson's criminal record and did not check it when he registered, said county elections spokeswoman Mary Cooney. Nonetheless, she said he will remain on the rolls "until we are directed otherwise to remove him."

Broward County in a nutshell, my fellow FReepers. I cannot wait until SoE Brenda Snipes is up for re-election. It'll feel great to throw her out of office... oh, wait, Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1 here. Nevermind!

I see this as probably the most compelling reason to postpone the election. There is substantial evidence of massive fraud in registering illegal voters by ACORN and others.

I have no idea how long it would take to edit voter rolls, but it is necessary to save the USA. And it must be sone before the election.

Between this and ACORN I’m not sure what can be done. The socialists are taking over this country and the people are buying it hook, line, and sinker. The groundwork has been laid through the MSM and the education system. We are baraged with bs propaganda from the media and we learn bs through the liberal education systems. I feel like the basic underpinning of the Country are unraveling.

This is the direct result of voter registration laws that make registering to vote as easy as helping yourself to a Kleenex.

The Division of Elections has a backlog of more than 108,000 possible felons who have registered to vote since January 2006 that it hasn't had the time or staff to verify. Browning estimated that about 10 percent, once checked, would be ineligible.

Excuse me, but how did they get registered if they haven't been verified as eligible? Answer: The current system is that if you've filled out your Kleenex and given it to some stranger who delivers a mountain of Kleenex to the elections board, you're registered. Then there's a small chance that eventually someone at the elections board will check whether you're eligible to register, and de-register you if you're not. There's an even smaller chance that this will happen before the next election.

The whole process needs to be revised to a series of steps that ensure that only eligible voters get registered: 1) elections board receives the Kleenex, 2) elections board determines whether person who is described on the Kleenex is a real person and is eligible to vote, 3) if real and eligible, elections board registers that person.

Why isn't it this way now? Because with current elections board staffing levels and quality, most truly eligible voters would never get registered either, and they'd sue. A big part of the problem is the notion, enshrined in law, that eligible voters have the right to register at essentially the last minute (i.e. months later than would be a reasonable cut-off for enabling the elections board to verify registrants), and at no inconvenience whatsoever to themselves (hence any random person is free to register voters, by handing them a Kleenex to fill out and delivering the Kleenex to the elections board).

Actually a better system would be to require all registrations to be done directly through the elections board. 1) Provide the required information to the elections board on the equivalent of the current Kleenex, 2) Elections board determines whether the person is real and eligible, and IF so, 3) Elections board mails the person a registration form to sign and return in order to be registered. This would require at a minimum that someone actually be receiving mail at the address listed -- not the case with many registrations that currently get processed. And and registration forms that end up getting sent to vacant lots or obviously unoccupied homes, would get returned to the elections board by the postal service, and masses of such returned forms in a particular precinct or larger political subdivision would trigger a law enforcement inquiry.
