HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - A U.S. Embassy official says American and Russian military leaders are meeting for unannounced talks in Finland, the highest-level military meeting between the two countries since Russia's war with U.S. ally Georgia in August.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Kim Hargan says the participants include Adm. Michael G. Mullen, the chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Nikolai Makarov, who was appointed the Russian Armed Forces' Chief of General Staff in June.

Hargan declined to give any details on Tuesday's talks, which had not been previously announced in Finland.

The Finnish Defense Ministry said the head of the Finnish defense forces, Admiral Juhani Kaskeala organized the meeting at an isolated manor house outside Helsinki. It gave no other details.

US, Russian military chiefs hold talks in Finland

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) — U.S. and Russian military leaders met Tuesday for unannounced talks in Finland, the highest-level military meeting between the two countries since Russia’s war with U.S. ally Georgia in August, a U.S. Embassy official said.

The participants included Adm. Michael G. Mullen, the chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his Russian counterpart, Gen. Nikolai Makarov, said Kim Hargan, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki.

Hargan declined to give any details on the talks, which had not been previously announced in Finland.

“They didn’t want it to be high-profile or anything,’’ Hargan said.

The Finnish Defense Ministry said the head of the Finnish defense forces, Admiral Juhani Kaskeala organized the meeting at an isolated manor house outside Helsinki. It gave no other details.

By THOM SHANKER Published: October 21, 2008 HELSINKI, Finland — The United States and Russia on Tuesday sent their top military officers to this neutral capital for an unannounced meeting to seek common ground and to try to move bilateral relations back on track, American officials said. The meeting was arranged with great secrecy and was the first time that Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had met his counterpart, Gen. Nikolai Makarov, since the Russian was appointed chief of the General Staff this summer. The two spoke by telephone multiple times during the brief war in August between Russia and Georgia over two breakaway provinces, which worsened relations between Moscow and Washington. from NY Times

“Strategically, I think it is important to have a dialogue with Russia and that we sustain a meaningful relationship over a long period of time,” a senior military official told reporters before the session.

Top international military officials meet in Adirondacks

http://adirondackdailyenterprise.com/page/content.detail/id/503035.html?nav=5008&showlayout=0

POSTED: October 18, 2008
SARANAC LAKE - Powerful generals and admirals from some of the most powerful nations on Earth are reportedly meeting somewhere in the local area this weekend after flying into the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear on Friday.

Among the passengers of a large Boeing 757 airplane with “United States of America” printed on its fuselage were top members of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and their counterparts from France, Germany and another country, possibly Great Britain, according to Barry DeFuria, a town of Harrietstown councilman and Airport Committee member who was there when the plane landed. A top military delegation from Italy flew in on a separate Falcon airplane, DeFuria said.

Town Supervisor Larry Miller, also on the Airport Committee, was also there and confirmed which nations’ officials were on which planes, but he said he did not know what kind of officials they were or where they were going from the airport. He said he and DeFuria had to get security clearances to be present and that soldiers were guarding the 757 around the clock at the airport.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff is the leadership council of the U.S. military, comprised of the top general or admiral of each branch of the armed services. Its current chairman is Admiral Michael Mullen.

Ruskie oligarchs not happy with Putin’s adventurism in Georgia. Costs them a bunch of money as oil prices and their stock market tank.

Why are these meeting stories in the news at all. Or is it a subtle message to worry Iran.

I believe you’re speaking of Mount Weather, and I am not sure it is still the official bunker at this point. I may be, I just don’t know.

Yes, something’s up, that’s for certain.
