Global crisis threatens to undo all U.N.'s work: Ban

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned his top lieutenants on Friday that the global financial crisis jeopardized everything the United Nations has done to help the world's poor and hungry.

"It threatens to undermine all our achievements and all our progress," Ban told a meeting of U.N. agency chiefs devoted to the crisis. "Our progress in eradicating poverty and disease. Our efforts to fight climate change and promote development. To ensure that people have enough to eat."

At a meeting also attended by the heads of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, Ban said the credit crunch that has stunned markets worldwide compounded the food crisis, the energy crisis and Africa's development crisis.

"It could be the final blow that many of the poorest of the world's poor simply cannot survive," he added, in one of his bleakest assessments of the impact of the financial turmoil.

In a statement after the meeting, Ban picked up a theme he has stressed since the crisis erupted last month, that it should not be allowed to hit hardest "those least responsible" -- the poor in developing countries.

The U.N. chief told reporters he would put that case to a financial summit in Washington on November 15 by U.S. called by President George W. Bush.

exactly how has the UN helped the world poor? Is the poor any better off than they were 25 years ago with the UN’s help? I know two things the UN has helped increase: RAPE (by UN workers) and Corruption.

“U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned his top lieutenants on Friday that the global financial crisis jeopardized everything the United Nations has done to help the world’s poor and hungry.”

Let him name one country where the U.N. programs have been the catalyst for reducing the poverty rate or decreasing the number of “hungry”.

He can’t; because like all the international bureaucracies that CLAIM to be alleviating “poverty” and “hunger”, the only thing their reports can site and the only thing they do site is what they spent - not what changed long term in the country.

the global financial crisis jeopardized everything the United Nations has done to help the world's poor and hungry.

So, paradoxically, for UN-type socialism to work, capitalism has to work. After all, there has to be SOME wealth SOMEWHERE to redistribute.

I think this means that its cutting into the loot that UN extract from the “aid” that it allegedly dispenses.

This is really going to hurt all those 3rd world dictators who steal those UN supplies as soon as they’re off the boat and then re-sell them with the profits going to their own swiss bank accounts.

The whole idea behind capitalism is you are entitled to what you create. You can keep it, trade it, give it away, but what you create you own. That drives the leftists crazy because in their universe, everything should be shared.

We need to stop funding the UN and turn the light switch off.

“So, paradoxically, for UN-type socialism to work, capitalism has to work. After all, there has to be SOME wealth SOMEWHERE to redistribute.”

You hit the nail on the head. If you listen closely enough to socialists, they’ll often admit how important the capitalist structure is. If he was completely honest, he’d come out and say that the U.N. can do nothing without free trade. For the time being, I’ll accept the between-the-lines message.

Well, it’s true that the poor will now suffer because of the systems of dependency that have been built up.

In the US, the programs put into place by FDR and LBJ suck up huge amounts of tax dollars, swallow about 90% of it to pay the bureaucracy and the politicians and their friends, and maybe use 10% to help the poor. If incomes drop and taxes drop, then the poor and the taxpayers will suffer first, because the last thing they will do is fire the bureaucrats who are sucking up all that money. And bureaucrats are not evil, they are just part of the system that FDR and LBJ built up and lesser politicians kept adding to.

Same with the UN. They do help feed the poor as well as rape them. But they rely on money from their members, chiefly the U.S., and that comes from the taxpayers. Again, maybe 50-60% of the money goes to UN bureaucrats, and most of the rest goes to third world dictators and their friends, but at least some of it trickles down to the poor.

Now those poor, who have been rendered depended on UN largesse, will be the first to suffer. How can the Eurocrats or the Democrats send billions to Africa, when they are facing incredible problems in their own countries?

It’s going to be a horrible mess, and a lot of innocent people will suffer. It will be bad if McCain is elected—not much he can do, really—but much, much worse under Obama, who will try to outdo FDR and LBJ and make things far worse than anything we’ve ever seen. Not just a national disaster, but a world disaster. And the deluded Euros are cheering him on.

The U.N., the planet’s collective con artist.

Gifting trillions in it’s own name since the 1940s, that governments have stolen from their citizens around the world.

And guess whose government stole the most from it’s citizens, who got next to no credit at all for the largess.

Exactly. Because they have successfully equated the bureaucracy with the solution: reducing the plunderers directly reduces the efficacy of the program. Or so the bureaucrats would have us believe.

The other fallacy is that money alone equates to "better." In the mind of the liberal, that's always true. However, anyone who WORKS for his money knows that in a lot of cases, things that cost more don't WORK any better, they're just more expensive. Witness our public schools for an example of THAT reality!

Don’t worry, General Ban. World President Obama will enact a multi-trillion dollar U.N. bailout plan right after he issues economic stimulus checks to the citizens of Africa.
