New, promising antibiotics in fight against MRSA superbug

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Two experimental antibiotics from the United States and Switzerland show promising results in fighting the methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) superbug, researchers said.

US pharmaceutical Paratek said on Sunday a new class of antibiotic it has developed called PTK 0896 was 98 percent efficient in countering MRSA -- 5.0 percent more efficient than rival Pfizer's Zyvox drug -- according to its phase ii clinical trial on 234 patients,

Switzerland's bio-pharmaceutical company Arpida said its Iclaprim drug administered intravenously was able to cure MRSA infection in 92.3 percent of patients.

Arpida recently submitted Iclaprim to approval by the US Food and Drug Administration. Company president Jurgen Raths said he expected FDA approval for the drug in January.

I hope it works. I’d hate to have to go into the hospital and have surgery these days. I’ve lost a couple friends to MRSA.

If this is true it’s wonderful news.

I spent 13 weeks with a pic line through which antibiotics were pumped into my heart 24/7. Following that was a year of heavy oral antibiotics.

Wouldn’t wish that experience on a dog.

I got MRSA due to a prior back surgery.

I’ve been reading alot lately about lysine, which is one of the simple, but essential amino acids.

Seems Americans diets these days don’t get as much as what we got in the past.

And lysine is absolutely necessary for good skin, and a healthy immune system response.

Not a cure all, but something to be aware of.

The really stupid thing is that if hospitals, gym etc cleaned properly and used tea tree oil in their cleaning products MRSA would be wiped out in short order.

When Obama is in power, he will increase taxes on these “greedy” drug companies and redistribute their wealth, to low income, non-taxpayers.

Of course, many of these low income, non-taxpayers will die from diseases like MRSA, when the drug companies are forced to slash their R&D budgets to pay Obama’s Marxist wealth redistribution taxes.

A friend of mine and her husband have both had MRSA infections over the last 5 years, both contracted in a hospital. The friend almost died but survived, just barely, and her husband is now currently fighting it off. He got it just as his cancer went into remission. What a tragedy if he dies of this infection after fighting off severe cancer of the colon and liver.

Great, more arms race with nature, now we can over-use this and end up with super-super-super bugs and hope there is a super-super-super-super antibiotic that can deal with it.

Well, it’s probably true that hospitals are just about the most dangerous environment there is. The constant use of antibiotics and various cleaning agents kills just about everything.

But of the things that are able to hang on and survive, they gotta be some serious bruiser bugs!

Nah. Slash marketing. That’s where the big money is spent anyway.

So it's ok in your mind for the government to tell companies how to spend or invest their money as long as it meets with your approval? Would you also be in favor of the Supreme Court taking an active role in forcing this "spreading of the wealth?"

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you don't have a clue as to how drug companies account for their expenses. Maybe that explains your lame statement above. Or, maybe, you just forgot the sarcasm tag.

Always a good idea to avoid hospitals. They are FULL of sick people!

My best friend in college lost his wife to MRSA after she went in for minor surgery.
