Transsexual gene link identified

Australian researchers have identified a significant link between a gene involved in testosterone action and male-to-female transsexualism.

DNA analysis from 112 male-to-female transsexual volunteers showed they were more likely to have a longer version of the androgen receptor gene.

The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals, the team reported in Biological Psychiatry.

However, other genes are also likely to play a part, they stressed.

Increasingly, biological factors are being implicated in gender identity.

There is a social stigma that transsexualism is simply a lifestyle choice, however our findings support a biological basis of how gender identity develops Professor Vincent Harley, researcher

One study has shown that certain brain structures in male-to-female transsexual people are more "female like".

In the latest study, researchers looked for potential differences in three genes known to be involved in sex development - coding for the androgen receptor, the oestrogen receptor and an enzyme which converts testosterone to oestrogen.

Comparison of the DNA from the male to female transsexual participants with 258 controls showed a significant link with a long version of the androgen receptor gene and transsexualism.

Within twenty years parents will be given a choice, not only on fetal health improvement by genetic insertion or removal.

They will also be offered a choice in sexual orientation, ask any parent of gay progeny how much would they pay to establish their brood's physical gender.

Beat me to it. It’s not a normal lifestyle. It’s a defect.

Even if this is true of hermaphroditic transexuals (intergender at birth), what makes a man who declares that he loves men and not women go pair up with a man who wants to be a woman and even gets breasts added to his body (or even go “all the way” in cosmetic surgery below the waist as well)?

Transsexualism and homosexuality are not the same thing.

Gays have been saying this is biological for a long time now, I’ve often wondered what would they do when the gene was identified and people are ready to get rid of it.

It must be a mutation caused by proximity to iron bars.

I’m sure this research links both, there are gay men who like to dress up from time to time as a woman(transsexual).

It must make them criminals too, since so many suddenly become gay in prison.

The Sex Positive Agenda has pushed for an end to all moral judgements over sexual pairings regardless of sex, age, relation, marital status, number, or species of partner(s).

The science of such pairings is not a factor. Even the Weather Underground engaged in polyamorous bi-sexual relationships. Ayers said he sought to end the institution of marriage (and in 2001 was asked about it as he’d married a fellow member of the Underground).

We are born naked. There is no cross-dressing gene.

All clothing is a result of culture and societal conditioning.

True. I was just thinking about how Romans used to consider anyone who wore pants (rather than a civilized kilt or long tunic) to be barbarians.

But, crossdressers are drawn to the clothing that is culturally associated with the opposite sex. It's not really the clothing that attracts them, per se, but the opportunity to emulate the opposite sex.

Of course, these days there are only a few articles of clothing in our society that are considered exclusive to one sex.

How about we just abort all the babies that show this defect?

That’s what we do with those that are suspected of having Down’s.

After all, it’s no different than killing any other animal, right?

New Orleans survived Katrina, I don't think they can make it without drag queens.

The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals

Note the word may, proving this is a premise, not actual proof.

But, if lack of testosterone is the problem, increasing testosterone should be a solution to the problem.
