Woman makes trip from San Luis de Potosi to cast vote for Obama
The Brownsville Herald ^ | October 28, 2008 | Laura Tillman

After her 1990 retirement from Brach's candy factory in Chicago, Amparo Rico Quintero has been making pilgrammages back to the United States from San Luis de Potosi every four years to cast her vote in presidential elections.

This year's trip wasn't easy. At 80 years old, Quintero needs the help of a walker. Nevertheless, she boarded an overnight bus Sunday and made it to Brownsville in time for early voting.

"This year, I'm voting for (Barack) Obama," Quintero said. "He's going to help the Mexican people, to make imigration fair.'

After spending 18 years as a member of the United States' working-class economy, she identifies with that group and believes Obama will do the most to help the working class.

"This country has given me so much," Quintero said. "People need Obama right now. McCain is only going to give more to the rich."

Quintero isn't alone in her presidential preference. According to a Reader's Digest Global Presidential Poll, 25 percent of Mexicans who responded support McCain while 70 percent support Obama....

Just across the Rio Grande in Matamoros, men in suits and women shaping gorditas expressed their hopes for Obama's victory.

"Obama is young, he has fresh ideas," said Antonio Galvan, the manager of Garcia's restaurant near the B&M International Bridge. "I think the majority of people (in Matamoros) are for Obama. "

Bush is soft on immigration, supposedly McCain is like Bush -— I don’t get it.

"Obama is young, he has fresh ideas," said Antonio Galvan

Can you get any more shallow? Besides, there's nothing fresh about a broken record ...

the failures of the past 8 years

4 more years of Bush

change

hope

B.S. I'm sick of this guy ... let's get rid of him by voting McCain.

Interesting. Didn't Cameron County go for Bush in 2004?

No Obama has old ideas, the same old ideas that have plagued the people of Matamoros- socialism. Just goes to show the people of Matamoros are dumb as bricks and will never learn.

I think Obama is likely to open wide the doors of immigration but it will be to Africans and Arabs, not Mexicans.

I have never heard Obama say he was going to help Mexicans. I have heard him whine about disenfranchised BLACKS.

This is the kind of person Obama attracts - they believe he is going to rescue them from the casual treatment of U.S. law -

Change to them means Obama will “fix our problem” “get us out of debt” “give us a house to live in” “pay us wages whether we work or not” “give us free living”.

All we have to do is vote him in whether it is allowed or not.

Oh yes, Obama said he was giving amnesty to the 12 million in the first 90 days of his administration and running through citizenship. With no ID, they will be allowed to vote. I know a Nigerain who has family there but no USA citizenship has already voted via absentee ballot. This is a stolen election for sure.

"United States from San Luis de Potosi every four years to cast her vote in presidential elections."

I wonder how many political candidates in Brownsville and other border towns are legal US citizens?

No mention of whether she ever was naturalized, do we now have cross-border voting in these states?

Wait now, the Brownsville paper prints this article and everyone is standing around and allowing it to happen without question? This vote is going to be counted??? Where is the largest legal team every assembled to make sure that we have fair elections.

Oh,....now I remember, that is just Obama’s team that makes sure that Republicans can't vote and illegals are counted.
