MA public school blocks Free Republic, welcomes DU

Good friend is a teacher in Westborough, MA, public schools. Told me that when either student or staff tries to open Free Republic, you get "Site Contains Unsuitable Material. Contact IT Manager." But DumpsterUnderground, Slate, etc. come up just fine.

Westborough accepts both state and federal (your) money. Our tax dollars being used to censor conservative opinion.

Which is remarkable considering how foul mouthed and vulgar the DUmp is compared to FreeRepublic.

Send Howie Carr a heads up about this.

This is not a big deal. Most schools generally ban all websites which contain chat or postings (as we have). Whether they should or not is a worthwhile questions. But, I don’t think it is an issue specific to FR.

Chief Judge Anthony Lewis-Margaret Marshall:
"At the request of my Masters at the Boston Globe and my husband at the New York Times,
Free Republic, independent thought, and conservative opinion are hereby banned in Massachusetts."

Big deal. They’ve just come out in the open about what they’ve been doing for the last few decades. Is there anyone who doesn’t know the Marxist schools have been aggressively pushing their Marxist agenda up until now? They’ve been steeling our money to do it all this time, why get angry about it now?

Abandon the Marxist schools and vote for people who will end all public funding for education.

The whole point of the posting is that it is specific to FR. They don’t allow FR, while allowing the kids to get to DU, which is a forum also.

Websence will on occasion block FR for being an advocacy group, clearing out my cache and browsing history will normally let me back in.

It might be simply how the "nanny" software is reading this site. My employer has such software. I can be blocked from web site A but allowed entry to web site B. They are both banks. One is classified as online shopping. Why the difference? Who knows. I'm blocked from certain newspapers. Others, I have full access to. Same with some search engines.

It could be specific or it could be related to some trigger in the software.

Yes, but they have a legitimate reason: they are hard believers of the 1st Amendment and the right to free speech and against censorship of any kind. After all the right to free speech means upholding speech that is offensive to you.... oh wait... </sarc>

Seriously, why would you expect anything other than Leninist-Maoist censorship from these people. They will fight for people’s right to view porn on a public library computer but block, the essence of the Free Speech Clause, i.e., political speech, because it threatens them. Even more insidious is the fact the parents agree with the policy.

The smarter, more geeky kids can easily get around blocking. (depending on which system the school uses.)

Our school blocks FR, too, but this has never been a problem for my kids. (they gots skillz...actually they report it’s quite simple to get around the system.)
