WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.
Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.
Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.
Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.
The AP could not reach Onyango immediately for comment. No one answered the telephone number listed in her name late Friday. It was unclear why her request for asylum was rejected in 2004.

My friend, the point is he’s been running for 2 years—in fact, he’s been running all his adult life. Doesn’t it seem that perhaps he should have tied up this loose end 2 years ago? He’s a millionaire lawyer, his wife’s a millionaire lawyer- he’s a Senator-—I’m sure they could have found a way to get this poor woman legal. That’s what I’m saying. And, imo, it reflects on his judgment and character in ways the everyday person can understand.
Perhaps the brother in a shack in Kenya or the aunt in a slum could be called.

This is the kind of embarrassing story that can derail a campaign in hours. Obama’s hubris may destroy his campaign just as he got the measurements for the Oval Office drapes.
Look at the past day. He kicked three newspapers off his charter after they endorsed McCain. He got huffy with the press during a Halloween photo op. His aunt turns out to be an illegal who made illegal donations to his campaign.
Things are suddenly turning against Obama.
This guy will spin it to show how “our failed immigrations policies” even effect his own family. “This is why we must fix our laws feel bad blah blah blah” I can hear it now.
Believe me we get it. He's a cheap bastard just like his cheap bastard running mate.
But he's also a sitting Senator who presumably knows his Aunt is here illegally in public housing and making illegal campaign contributions to her cheap bastard nephew.
Let her stay and ship him out. I'm good with that.

And did she vote often. It is Massachusetts, land of the dems and totally controlled by corrupted Dem pols. I would assume she lives in the the district of an allegedly corrupt lawmaker on Beacon Hill State Sen. Dianne Wilkerson (D) who was firmly supported today by WRKO radio host Tom Finneran - the disgraced, ex-speaker (D) of the Taxachusett House. The feds have charged Sen. Wilerson with taking money in exchange for influencing legislation and getting a liquor license for a proposed Roxbury club.
These stories, Joe the Plumber, the "wealth redistribution," Biden's babbling insanity...individually they wouldn't derail the history-making campaign for the first black president. But with all of these together, people may start thinking "Do I really want this guy to be running the economy and the military?"
It is still October here on the west coast! Hilary’s October surprise!
