You can't help the poor, by destroying the rich.
You can't bring about prosperity, by discouraging thrift.
You can't lift the wage earner up, by pulling the wage payer down.
You can't further the brotherhood of man, by inciting class hatred.
You can't build character and courage, by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You can't help men by doing for them what they could and should, do for themselves.
~William J. H. Boetcker
One of the sad signs of our times is that we have demonized those who produce, subsidized those who refuse to produce, and canonized those who complain.
~Thomas Sowell
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
~Samuel Adams
When a government takes over a peoples economic life it becomes absolute, and when it has become absolute it destroys the arts, the minds, the liberties and the meaning of the people it governs.
~Maxwell Anderson
A welfare state is frightened of every poor person who tries to get in and every rich person who tries to get out.
~Harry Browne
Government price-fixing once started, has alike no justice and no end. It is an economic folly from which this country has every right to be spared.
~Calvin Coolidge
A society that puts equality...ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom.
~Milton Friedman
The best way to put more money in people's wallets is to leave it there in the first place.
~Edwin Feulner
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution ... or have failed their purpose ... or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should be attacked for neglecting my constituents' 'interests,' I shall reply that I was informed that their main interest is liberty, and in that cause I am doing the very best I can.
~Barry Goldwater
They have gun control in Cuba. They have universal health care in Cuba. So why do they want to come here?
~Paul Harvey
The threat of people acting in their own enlightened and rational self-interest strikes bureaucrats, politicians and social workers as ominous and dangerous.
~W.G. Hill
The real "haves" are they who can acquire freedom, self-confidence, and even riches without depriving others of them. They acquire all of these by developing and applying their potentialities. On the other hand, the real "have nots" are they who cannot have aught except by depriving others of it. They can feel free only by diminishing the freedom of others, self-confident by spreading fear and dependence among others, and rich by making others poor.
~Eric Hoffer
People who make careers out of helping others -- sometimes at great sacrifice, often not -- usually don't like to hear that those others might get along fine, might even get along better, without their help.
~John Holt
The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
~Thomas Jefferson
It is impossible to introduce into society a greater change and a greater evil than this: the conversion of the law into an instrument of plunder.
~Fredric Bastiat
All forms of tampering with human beings, getting at them, shaping them against their will to your own pattern, all thought control and conditioning is, therefore, a denial of that in men which makes them men and their values ultimate.
~Isaiah Berlin
The inherent vice of capitalism is the uneven division of blessings, while the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal division of misery.
~Sir Winston Churchill
The more one considers the matter, the clearer it becomes that redistribution is in effect far less a redistribution of free income from the richer to the poorer, as we imagined, than a redistribution of power from the individual to the State.
~Bertrand de Jouvenel
Conform and be dull.
~James Frank Dobie
What is a left-wing socialist but a Marxist without a gun?
~Don Feder
When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.
~Benjamin Franklin
The Tenth Commandment sends a message to socialists, to egalitarians, to people obsessed with fairness, to American presidential candidates in the year 2000 -- to everyone who believes that wealth should be redistributed. And that message is clear and concise: Go to Hell.
~P.J. O'Rourke
Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive.
~Westbrook Pegler
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.
~William Pitt
How do you tell a Communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.
~Ronald Reagan
And to conclude...a few words from the other side:
My object in life is to dethrone God and destroy capitalism.
~Karl Marx
We can't expect the American People to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have Communism.
~Nikita Khrushchev
Society's needs come before the individual's needs.
~Adolf Hitler
History repeats itself. Question is, how vigilant are you?
Obama said he’s going to force businesses to hire people. Who is going to force the people to work for these businesses? The man has no clue.
Ping of interest.
One final push to save the U.S.A.!
The challenge:
Between NOW and election day, convince at least two Obama/Undecided voters to vote for McCain. Further, convince these two people (or two others) to take up the same challenge. (Like a chain letter)
So you have converted people in the past? Good, but we need more!
Many Obama supporters are mindlessly supporting him, with no real reason, this means it is VERY easy to get them to switch over. Even if you fail, other Obama/undecideds may be in the room and hear valid arguments and question their faith in the One.
Do your part...your country depends on it!

Besides, it's hard to pay employees when there isn't an income stream coming from sources like, say, clients or customers in the form of profits.
...You are correct. 0bama is clueless.
Ping for some good words from the past!
~P.J. O'Rourke
That is brilliant! I didn't know P.J. O'Rourke was a theologian. (Although, historically, the traditional numbering system used throughout most of Christendom calls that first coveting commandment the NINTH Commandment.)
True, but as far as Catholicism goes (IIRC, O’Rourke is a Catholic), the Ninth Commandment deals with one’s spouse. Whereas the Tenth Commandment states: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.”
American evangelicals combine the two coveting commandments into one, which they number as Tenth. And they separate out the graven images as a Second. The more historic way is to include gaven images under First and have to coveting commandments as Ninth and Tenth.
Awesome post. Thanks!

The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design.

and Jesus said, What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take custom or taxes? From their sons, or from strangers? Peter said to Him, from strangers. Jesus said to him, Then truly the sons are free.

See, when the government spends money, it creates jobs; whereas when the money is left in the hands of taxpayers, God only knows what they do with it. Bake it into pies, probably. Anything to avoid creating jobs.

A friend of mine was asked to a costume ball a short time ago. He slapped some egg on his face and went as a liberal economist.

Economists are people who see something that works in practice and wonder if it would work in theory.

-Ambrose Bierce
[A] State which dwarfs its men, in order that they may be more docile instruments in its hands even for beneficial purposes, will find that with small men no great thing can really be accomplished; and that the perfection of machinery to which it has sacrificed everything, will in the end avail it nothing, for want of the vital power which, in order that the machine might work more smoothly, it has preferred to banish.
-John Stuart Mill
In Powell v. Com. of Pennsylvania, 127 U.S. 678 (1888), Justice Field in his dissenting opinion gave a classical definition of the notion of “liberty”:
“It is the clause declaring that no state shall ‘deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law,’ which applies to the present case. This provision is found in the constitutions of nearly all the states, and was designed to prevent the arbitrary deprivation of life and liberty, and the arbitrary spoliation of property. As I said on a former occasion, it means that neither can be taken, or the enjoyment thereof impaired, except in the course of the regular administration of the law in the established tribunals. It has always been supposed to secure to every person the essential conditions for the pursuit of happiness, and is therefore not to be construed in a narrow or restricted sense. Ex parte Virginia, 100 U.S. 366. By ‘liberty,’ as thus used, is meant something more than freedom from physical restraint or imprisonment. It means freedom, not merely to go wherever one may choose, but to do such acts as he may judge best for his interest not inconsistent with the equal rights of others; that is, to follow such pursuits as may be best adapted to his faculties, and which will give to him the highest enjoyment....”
What Obama is proposing is the antithesis of liberty.
