McCain Creeps Ahead in Missouri

Presidential hopefuls John McCain and Barack Obama are locked in a dead heat in the bellwether state of Missouri, and McCain is now inching ahead, according to Tina Hervey, director of communications for the Missouri Republican Party.

She said the state party’s internal polls already have McCain a point or two ahead of Obama.

“It is nuts and bolts time,” Hervey explained Saturday from party headquarters in Jefferson City. “We are in hand-to-hand combat and we are very skillful.”

In the last 104 years Missourians have voted for the winner in every presidential election, except for 1956 when Missouri went Democratic and Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower ultimately won.

Missouri has 11 electoral votes.

Two weeks ago, Obama was leading 49 percent to 44 percent in Missouri, according to a Rasmussen/Fox News poll. Although McCain had been holding fairly consistent leads throughout the year, Obama pulled ahead in October after the stock market tumbled, the numbers showed.

Since then, poll numbers have ricocheted back and forth between the candidates, with Missouri surveys alternately showing McCain owning a 3-point advantage and an 8-point deficit. Last week he was down 2 points and closing fast, according to the Oct. 27 Rasmussen poll.

MO is the bellweather state. Its finally trending back to McCain. He takes it by three to four points!

How ironic, Truman’s Home state.

Hmm...I keep hearing that McCain “must” win FL-NC-VA-OH and that is “unlikely” but he could do it, they all have natural a natural Republican advantage in them, including MO.

We could see a real shock in the first three hours after the East Coast polls close, McCain ahead in all 4 “must win” states and awaiting the PA results...

The first indication is always IN. If he does better than Bush in the Hoosier State, its gonna be a great night.

I had heard that PA would be first..

But no matter, all of the early votes will be fairly easy to count, we will have a really good idea of what happened and quickly, the only hold up will be the more rural counties that will go heavily for McCain.

And then the fun will begin, in 04 GWB got rural voters out to the polls in numbers so large the “experts” were shocked..just shocked..we will see if McCain/Palin can do the same thing.

IN and KY have some polls that close at 6 ET, and some at 7 ET. Some parts of each state are in Eastern time zone, and some are in Central.

I wonder if they will call the states before all polls are closed in each state.

If they're using exit polls they could. But they're so rife with problems, they'll wait til 90% of the vote is in before calling a state. But you can be sure they'll call Obama states very early and McCain states late.

Well, in 2000, I voted for the libertarian candidate, since it appeared that Bush had the state's electors sewn up. In 2004, it was closer, so I did vote for Bush. This year, there's no choice for me but to vote for Bush. I've got to try to cancel out one illegal, fraudulent voter in my state. It's a sad state of affairs, but at least MO does occasionally send ACORN workers to prison.

That’s an unintendedly funny post. I don’t think it is Bush you will be voting for.
