...and more efficient appliance... for even more money. Looked at the prices of "efficient" washers & dryers? Worse, they have more gimickry to wear out or fail, giving higher & more frequent repair costs/earlier replacement.

Oh, maybe he then says to hang your clothes out for free? Ask your HOA about that, assuming you don't live on the thrid floor of a cheap apartment building, where even if you cold hang them out on the roof, they would be stolen or vandalized before they were dry.

OTOH, how many cash strapped people are going to spend ("invest" in Lib-speak) money they don't have to replace an "inefficient" 3-5 year old fridge or freezer that is working perfectly well...for a 'pay back' that takes longer than the expected life span of the appliance?

Yep; changing light bulbs and keeping your tire pressure correct is going to solve all our energy problems.

We're servicing our 4x4 vehicles for winter. The first 5 inches of snow accumulated Oct 11th. The wood piles are ready to keep us warm. We purchased motorcycles in August and completed our class M endorsement written/riding skills tests before the weather turned bad. The little bikes (TW200/XT250) are 73 MPG+ transportation in town. The big bikes DR 650SE/BV 500 are 55 MPG with long distance capability. My wife still isn't ready for a "real" motorcycle with clutch/gears so the "twist and go" BV 500 allows her to keep up with me on the streets. Next summer I'll get her out on the dual sport bikes.

I'm more concerned about keeping my "in basket" full of productive work. Being an employee at my company doesn't mean squat unless you have performed the necessary marketing and contracting to turn your labor into cash flow. If you're not generating cash flow to cover your salary, the company is quite happy to issue a layoff notice. It's a fine meritocracy with zero job security.
