Adding the finishing touches to Grant Park (Q&A if you plan to attend Hussein Obomber rally)

Adding the finishing touches to Grant Park
James Janega | Tribune reporter
November 2, 2008

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama returns home Tuesday for an Election Night rally in Grant Park that has sparked huge civic interest and many questions about how the event will work.

**SNIP**

Q. How many people will show up?

A. Daley estimated 1 million, a number he said was a guess. The campaign's permit said there would be 65,000 ticketed guests and 7,500 "participants" at the official fenced area. But interest is high and the weather is expected to be excellent, so expect quite a throng outside the official rally site.

**SNIP**

Q. What time will Obama give his victory or concession speech?

A. Probably not before the polls close in California at 10 p.m. Chicago time. Perhaps hours later.

Q. What happens if the election outcome is in doubt late into the night?

A. The permit application said "amplified sound" was planned until 1 a.m. Officials were mum on whether they would allow the crowd to wait past that hour. At this point, Metra is scheduled to end service at 1 a.m., and the CTA will run "until everyone has gotten home."

Q. What will security be like downtown?

A. Heavy. The Chicago Police Department has canceled days off for all officers, and Chicago firefighters have been asked to have their personal equipment with them at home. Even the U.S. Coast Guard will patrol in Burnham Harbor and on Lake Michigan.

Wouldn’t want to be working security Tuesday night/Wed. morning. It’s not going to be pretty when McCain wins.

The coroner’s office will remain open all night, and will have all it’s staff working a double shift.

If God doesn’t strike this party with fire and brimstone, He owes Sodom and Gomorrah an apology.

If I lived near there, I’d be making plans leave before nightfall.

Its likely to be an ugly situation regardless of the election results.

Or, if he loses...they won’t care. Wouldn’t want to be in that crowd either way...

The date of the Great Chicago Fire will no longer be 1871 after this Tuesday.

Remember a few years ago when they held a ‘Woodstock’ like concert in NY?...and it got completely out of hand.....that’s what I see going down if obama loses.

Right. Just usher 1 million rioters home. Good luck.

No kidding. The arrogance at work here is beyond the pale. If Obama loses, it’s going to be a calamity.

This will go down as the most expensive concession speech in history.

If the election is too close to call or swinging towards McCain at 1 AM, this place will become riotous pandamonium. There will be personal injury and death and extensive damage to property. Will Barry have a helicopter pad set up to whisk him from the fray? Or will he stand before the tumultuous croud and hoist his staff and his diadem above them and command them to be still?

I will relish Obama’s resignation speech more than anything I’ve ever relished in my entire life!

I live in the SW burbs of the city with several family members and close friends as Chicago firefighters. The Chicago firefighters are on call for Tuesday and Wednesday and have been ORDERED to bring their equipment home with them in case riots break out and they get called to a location other than their firehouse. And the fear is those riots could occur with an Obama loss OR victory. I heard two firemen state what the ministers have stated - revelation or revolution.

Brace yourself Chicago and be safe out there....

Many police officers from the suburbs have been ordered to be on “standby” at a large venue approx. 15 miles from downtown. This is “riot duty”, not traffic control. I live about 30 miles from the center of this bull-@hit. I can only imagine 300,000 angry (or maybe even joyous, it dosen't matter) obamaites marching north on Michigan Ave up towards the Water Tower Place high end shopping district. Our friend “lootie” from New Orleans will have Rolex Watches hanging out of his back pockets, not Heineken's. The only safe place will be some book stores, but they will probably just set those on fire.

**** The Coast Guard? Can I book them for one of my parties? ****

I haven't been by the lake in some time but with the nice weather we've had (68o now) boats may still be in the harbors.

Ya never know what those (cough) 'one million' Obama nazis will do when Barry loses. (Daley is certifiably insane)
