Five months and thousands of weddings after California's highest court sanctioned same-sex marriage, anxious eyes around the nation will closely follow voters Tuesday as they decide whether to turn back the clock.
Given the state's size and influence, the vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage has become a referendum on sexual orientation and civil rights. Both sides call it the "Gettysburg" of the power struggle between the gay rights movement and the Christian right, with the victors capturing momentum in other states.
"As California goes, so goes the nation," Mayor Gavin Newsom boldly predicted at a City Hall celebration the day the state Supreme Court legalized marriages of gays and lesbians.

Given the problems “straights” seem to have with the concept of fidelity in marriage, why are the gays so eager to marry?
There is something about this whole movement that just bewilders me.
Just picked up my mail and in it was a flyer obviously aimed toward Obama voters. It has a photo of Barack Obama and in large letters this quote “I am not in favor of gay marriage.” On the back are several prominant African Americans giving their support to Prop 8.
African Americans will vote for 8 likely in the same proportions they vote for Obama. I think the latino community will do same. Prop 8 will win easily.
Heh. been a long time since I’ve posted here. I’ve been a lurker since 2006 election. Now that this election is coming up, guess I’ll come out of hiding. :p
Anyways, I’d like to relate you a story about Prop. 8. My family for the most part, is an Obama family. No amount of talk from the one conservative (me) is going to change that.
However, the same can’t be said with Prop 8. My sister came over to my house and tried to convince my dad to vote no to Prop 8, basically saying the No on Prop 8 talking points. My dad on the other hand, wasn’t so sure. Since he knew in this state, Civil Unions had the same rights as Marriage, it sounded like he was going to vote yes on it. I don’t think he changed his mind when my sister went up and left.
Obama will win this state. But if this is any sign, Prop 8 will pass regardless.
Prop 8 is going to win by a huge margin. I am certain of it. The vast majority of people are fed up with the homosexuals’ attempt to change our culture and indoctrinate our kids. Luckily I don’t live in one of the big cities because I fully expect them to riot like they did after the Dan White verdict.
Don’t forget FL and Arizona.
NO MSM COVERAGE of the marriage amendments.
NO MSM COVERAGE of NO INCREASE IN PROPERTY TAXES FOR EXPENDITURES TO HURRICANEPROOF YOUR HOME IN FL! (as in lower insurance)
Instead the MSM is busy selecting undergarments to throw on stage at the obama victory rally.
homosexual marriage has NEVER been about homosexuals, it has always been about attacking marriage.
The left wingers at the ABA conventions have always talked about “de-institutionalizing” marriage into a legislative construct rather than a common law insitution.
Those left wing lawyers want to break appart the family unit’s independence from government. Mommy and Daddy and baby makes three is a fundamental beyond constitutional hoop jumping. It is a threat to the left wing power grab.
Homosexuals may THINK this is about them, but the fact of the matter is they are useful idiots who are just buying the rope for their own hanging.
I disagree. Prop 8 is not as seriously as Gettysburg even in a metaphorical sense.
I must be having a crazy sense of deja vu, but I though CA voters had already passed a proposition banning gay marriage, and it was immediately challenged in court and tossed out.
It was an expensive win.
It gave us the Gettysburg address and a rallying cry.
We also have AZ and FL to contend with.
note how nobody is mentioning those two, only KAAAAHLEEEEFOURNeeeeeAAAAHH.
In FL they need 60% to pass,
In california is it simple majority?
I just watched a documentary last night about the Battle of the Wheat Field.
Gettysburg is amazing.
I believe so.
60% is a bit weird—must be a State Constitutional Amendment.
yes, the democrats pushed for 60% for amendments specifically to make it harder for a marriage amendment eventuality..
