WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."
Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

Nice timing. That’ll pick up a few sympathy votes for sure.
Thoughts and prayers to the Obama family.
Will this swing the election to him?
.......and it looks as though where “The ONe” was actually born goes to the grave given that Hawaii authorities will produce a birth certificate
prayers.. folks, let’s keep it respectful.
Cancer patients usually pass away from a planned terminal sedation.
This may be the first politically timed terminal sedation ever, though.
prayers for the humanity but
suspicion for the “right on cue.”
trust but verify as the great one said.
respectfully there is no immunity tottem for Obama.
(BTW watch his face during the NFL show)
Another article printed entire statement from Obama and 1/2 sister that said Mrs. Dunham was a private person and there will be a small private service at ‘a later date’.
She was a typical white cornerstone of our family...
As I pull my tin foil hat a little tighter on my head read what Maya Soetoro Ng said about how long her grandmother has made HI her home found here:
It would be ridiculous if anyone were to cast a sympathy vote for Obama because of this. My theory is that for every sympathy vote, there will be another voter who compensates by NOT casting a sympathy vote. (Actually, it would have made more sense for someone to vote for BO to give the old lady one last thrill. Too late now.)
RIP for Obama’s granmother.
Did he say that she would not live to see Election Day?
It certainly won't hurt him.It *will* be interesting to see how hard the lamestream media runs with this story tonight and tomorrow.
Yes, thoughts and prayers to the Obama family. She did so much for him. Grandma’s are the best.
Will this swing the election to him?
Are you serious? What planet are you living on?
May God rest her soul.
This is odd, kind of surrealistic.
A PUMA in my office said she died last week and that this is a set up.
Did he have power of attorney over her? Did he decide to stop any kind of life support?
Will Barack deliver a “Win one for the Tooter” speech?
..I think they did that to King George V of England--in order to get the news into the evening papers in time...
Hey Phemone - did it escape your notice that this has been posted under breaking news a couple times? And you decided to post it again because??
What’s this? He’s not going to raise her from the dead?
Unbelievable. Unreal. WTH.
You’re right. My mother passed away like that this past June. My prayers go out to the family.
American always vote with sympathy. Remember how after Mel Carnahan died, people switched their votes to him and he won?
Prayers for the family. The timing may be interesting, but regardless, this is a loss for them.
“It would be ridiculous if anyone were to cast a sympathy vote for Obama because of this. My theory is that for every sympathy vote, there will be another voter who compensates by NOT casting a sympathy vote.”
I live in Missouri ... a state where you can still see “Still For Mel” ... people who voted for a dead man so yes, sympathy votes are real and timing is everything.
Wow, just before the 6:00 news. How convenient
If it has been my grandmother, I would have "set the world on fire" to use any option to fight the cancer by all means available!!
I have a strong feeling hat she did NOT approved his marriage with Michelle (racists???) because at seems that she and the kids did NOT visit granny the times the visited Hawaii, hmmm!!!
So.....does Grandma’s vote count?
...moving right along....
Not only pick up sympathy votes but neutralize fear of him and anger. It sucks when grandparents and love ones die, it’s the worst. But damn it why now?
Ironically, yes, he did. A few Freepers said a couple weeks ago they wouldn't be surprise if there was an announcement the day before the election that Toot had died.
Prayers for the Obama family, it’s good he saw her when he did.
Don't underestimate the breathtaking stupidity of a very substantial percentage of this country's voters.
My theory is that for every sympathy vote, there will be another voter who compensates by NOT casting a sympathy vote.
I refer you to the reply I gave immediately above.
Even she couldn’t stomach the thought of her ungrateful, SOB grandson as the President.
Can he have a televised rally like they did when Wellstone died?
Did this woman ever speak to the press? Her grandson is a mystery to this nation and he said some nasty things about her (and white people in general) during the campaign.
Like those who have said above - let’s keep it respectful. No doubt she lived through some tough times and my prayers go out to this woman. Whether we like Obozo or not, she raised this kid under tough circumstances. Sounds like she was a tough woman.
I am sorry that BO lost his grandmother but just because something sad happened to this guy doesn’t change the fact that he’s no good. i don’t think many people will give the sympathy vote and if they do, they shouldn’t be allowed to vote-PERIOD!
The statement did not say when Madelyn Dunham died or who was with her. Her 86th birthday was Oct. 26.
Just another “TYPICAL WHITE PERSON”
