Madelyn Dunham blazed a trail for women in banking

Madelyn Payne Dunham opened doors for women at Bank of Hawaii with a firm hand and no fanfare, the same way she helped raise her grandson, Barack Obama.

Dunham, 86, died last night after a battle with cancer, according to a statement from Obama and his half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng.

Petite and determined, Dunham rose from clerk to bank vice president in the space of a decade, one of two women to reach that position at Bankoh in 1970, the first ever. Dunham remained reserved then, just as she was decades later when the world’s spotlight shone on her grandson.

“She’s a very down-to-earth person, a tiny little woman,” said Alice Dewey, a University of Hawaii professor emeritus and family friend. “No nonsense.”

During Obama’s historic campaign for the U.S. presidency, Dunham steadfastly ...

When I read about this gal the only thing that occurs to me are Lillian Carter's words....

"When I look at my four children sometimes I say to myself,Lillian, you should have stayed a virgin."

I suspect she could have died any time in the last few days. Too bad this seems timed for maximum sympathy. Sorry. I don’t believe 0bama has a conscience. I believe he would use anything and everything to manipulate people. Prayers for Mrs.Dunham’s soul. Maybe she was a decent person.

Actually, despite being a banker, she was quite the leftist herself (along with her husband, Barry’s putative grandfather, who was a truly raving leftist).

I’m starting to think that Leftism is an illness. I wish there was a cure for it.

Where are the details of this available?

OH MAN....That’s my FAVORITE Miss Lillian quote of ALL time!!

A mother who's prepared to tell the truth about her worthless children.Ain't many of those around these days.At least not in this country.

Of course,we'll never even get the facts regarding Osama's birthplace from *his* family.Or from the State of Hawaii.

I don’t know anything about the brother. But all the details about the family have been posted here, and apparently Obama’s unreadable exercises in self-definition, his “autobiographies,” contain information on them.

The grandfather, of course, is the one who thought that Barry should be brought up by Frank Marshall Davis, a black Marxist radical with sexual obsessions.

The daughter, Obama’s (again, putative) mother, was a typical red diaper baby, and had indeed been raised by two very left-wing parents, Obama’s white grandfather and grandmother.

If she blazed such a big trail, how come no one has ever heard of her?

Please dont take this personally because it isnt mean to be that way.

But what you wrote is a pet peeve of mine. I read through obituaries all the time and see all of the wonderful things that people did and how great they were. But when I met them, they were idiots or jerks to their families.

Some people just cannot bring themselves to be honest about the dead. I dont mean we need to disrespect the deceased. And it is not necessary to bring up all of their ill deeds. Just let them be remembered as they were, not as if they had no sins.

From the article:

When he left them two years later, the Dunhams stepped in to help raise little “Barry,” so his mother could go back to college and get her degree in anthropology. They also looked after Barry during his fifth-grade year and again in high school, allowing him to attend the prestigious Punahou School with help from scholarships. His mother spent those years in Indonesia, her second husband’s homeland and the site of her field work as an anthropologist.

This is interesting. There has been some conflicting information about whether he was in Indonesia until age 10 or age 12. Maybe this slipped out; he came to Hawaii for grade 5 (age 10) and then went back to Indonesia until high school (age 14?). I think he tries as best he can to minimize the time he spent in Indonesia.
