Alaska Senate Race: Ted Stevens Beats Mark Begich
Right Pundits ^

Posted on 11/05/2008 3:04:54 AM PST by lewisglad

Right Pundits is calling a surprising winner in the Alaska Senate race, incumbent Senator Ted Stevens over Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. Stevens leads by enough votes in today’s count to overcome any deviation from the absentee ballots which are yet to be counted.

To outsiders in the lower 48 states, we have difficulty understanding the result. How can a convicted felon be reelected to office in a year which favors Democrats? The guy was just found guilty of corruption, lying about seven provisions of the Ethics in Government Act. No brainer.

The answer is Sarah Palin. So while liberals in the media savaged her, Alaskans flocked to the polls to vote for their native daughter and John McCain on November 4th. They like their governor and they are angry at Democrats for savaging their leader.

They took out their wrath on Mark Begich. She had undeniable coattails, and Ted Stevens was the beneficiary of them to the chagrin of Democrats in Alaska and everywhere.

It is unclear if Ted Stevens will be able to serve in the Senate. Unless the conviction is overturned on appeal, he faces certain expulsion from the partisan Democrat Senate. If he cannot serve, Sarah Palin will ironically appoint his successor, enacting another pound of flesh on the Democrats. Politics is so interesting.

The Democrats can expel him but Alaska will just send another Republican up in his place. If they want to get partisan, next year is going to be very ugly. All in all, a good thing indeed.

[How can a convicted felon be reelected to office in a year which favors Democrats?]

Perhaps they are not as heavily innudated with illegal immigrants and acorn democrat socialists as the rest of America is now. It is just a matter of time.

Bush can give him a pardon on the way out just to shove it in the Rat's faces.

Perhaps you should ask Ted Kennedy's constituents.

The question is how much will Reid and Pelosi push “power sharing” for Obama.

What is the Senate procedure on that if Bush pardons Stevens? Does that mean resignation is removed from the table...

LOL!! That is hilarious. But I'm with Governor Palin. CUT the corruption, not reinforce it.

I suppose the Rats could still censure Stevens, but not force him to resign under Senate rules with a full pardon.

Most ironic is that this one event might prevent them from getting their magical 60 seats. Esp. since it looks like we may lose both MN and OR.

Not sure of the protocols, but wouldn’t be great if she appointed herself as Senator. Sweet Revenge.

Do you think Sarah will appoint me to be the new senator from Alaska? I’m not a resident, but hell, we don’t have rules any more and I’m willing to serve.

Really. Isn’t this disgusting? If there was one Republican who in a sane world should lose, it would be Stevens.

Not at all. The vote I cast, along with a lot of other Republicans in Alaska, was for the sake of the party. It was not an endorsement of Stevens, who will get tossed from the senate. Then the governor, who is a Republican, can appoint a Republican replacment. If Stevens hadn't been reelected, we'd be stuck with a Democrat.
