A little light at the end of the tunnel...Proposition 8
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 11/5/2008 | Justin Check

Proposition 8, which would establish marriage as a union between a man and a woman, passed with 52.1% of the vote, against 47.9% opposed, with 94.6% of precincts reporting. The approval marks a stunning upset in a $70 million campaign that just weeks ago looked to be running in favor of preserving gay marriage rights. The passage of Prop 8, as it is known, would be a major victory for religious conservatives seeking to ban gay marriage in other states, and a crippling setback for the gay rights movement nationwide.

First the good news: This is an amendment to the state Constitution. That means that state judges and the state supreme court CAN’T overturn it. CA may delay implementing it through sneaky methods, and may try to work around it. But they can’t overturn it once the actual ballot measure passes and is certified into law.

Now the bad news: The support for this measure was WAY down (almost 10%) over the last time the measure (not a constitutional amendment that time) passed. Support for this is eroding and it is likely that some time in the future, perhaps 20 years or so, this will be reversed by a similar method.

More bad news: Prop 4. CA still CAN NOT pass a very limited and controlled parental notification law for abortion. Your kid can’t go on a field trip without your consent, but she can get a major medical procedure without not only your consent, but even your KNOWLEDGE!

This state used to be a fabulous western land of opportunity and at least reasonable politics. But every year things devolve further. We’re no Massachusetts, NY, IL, or PA yet in terms of decay and inane leadership. But we’re very very close. This is not the same wonderful state of even 10 years ago. Heartbreaking.

And it has almost nothing to do with Obama’s win here. It’s all about the “vote me some free stuff” mentality that is taking over and the absolute rejection of even modest social conservatism. You have a better chance here of passing a measure protecting a chicken egg than a baby in-utero. We passed a measure controlling how farm animals are kept. But you can’t protect even an unborn child — even if you allow them to think of the unborn as “just” a clump of growing cells, I can’t believe one would think this less valuable than a chicken. Un-be-lievable.

I live in SF, the most “tolerant” city in the country. Our Yes on 8 signs were stolen by angry mobs as fast as they were put up. The ones in front of our house managed to stay somehow. After the election around 10pm pst, we heard a car outside honking and people yelling something unintelligible.

Yes, we brought the signs in.

Bullied again.

Sigh.

"No, I darn well know what’s going on but it shows when Americans get fed up and pushed to the brink they can accomplish anything"

What?!?!? Fed up Americans sure as hell didn't accomplish keeping a Muslim socialist away from the Presidency of the United States.

The day of such foolish notions is over.

Yes, I hear you and it’s true. But when “traditionalists”, Christians, Conservatives, etc band together ANYTHING is possible. I believe VERY soon there will be an alarming “wake up” call to the people of the United States. I am usually a pessimistic or realistic person, but I believe this. Why? Because I feel things will get SO BAD that there will be no choice but to “turn to God” and go back to what works...Free enterprise or Capitalism!!! Man oh man, our forefathers died for our freedoms of speech, faith and much more. I for one, will not let that go without a “fight”!

Dude, chill. These people that made the difference in the vote are brainwashed 19-28 year college students. Also, the morons that believe everything they see on TV were brainwashed that “George Bush” was “bad”. Their hatred for Bush made them vote irrationally for Obama.

50 years from now we’ll see that Bush will be hailed as one of the best Presidents ever. During Linciln’s term, he only had about 1/3 of the country’s approval, yet he is hailed as on of the greatest presidents!

long story short and your missing the point, when things get so bad people will turn. Take away their freedoms, peace of mind and comfortable stance and they will revolt...mark my words.

Now stop getting all over me because your bringing me down. I KNOW the people will win this country back....sorry to say it’s gotta’ hit rock bottom first and it ain’t going to be pretty!

I agree that while it is somewhat heartening to see that majorities still support traditional marriage our new federal rulers will take action to set all this aside. Hussein has said he will sign off on the “Freedom of Choice Act” which will make abortion on demand at any time for any reason the law of the land thus overriding state limits on partial birth abortion and parental notification. There is no reason to assume that the leftists will not undertake something similar in regards to creating a “right” for the sexually dysfunctional to “marry” by enaction of federal legislation.

While I hate to rain on anyone's feel sorry for themselves parade, there are several things wrong with your rant. To start with neither the senate or the house got the blowout they thought they would get, they do not have a bullet proof majority in the senate. Secondly, the vast majority of people in the US, including the left, think that marriage is for one man, one woman and therefore will raise he** if the so called "freedom of choice act" tries to be ram rodded through the senate and house. This is one issue that the left and right stand together on.

There is much good news among the bad today, for one most local elections in most states put republicans into office and, as I already noted, we kept more seats in the fed houses than was anticipated and there were 3 anti gay marriage acts passed in 3 seperate states. The majority of states have banned gay marriage, even Bozo and the boys will have a hard time pushing that through.

While we are looking at a communist president, the country as a whole have not gone communist, if we had Bozo and the MSM would not have gone to such great lengths to hide the face he is one.

I am going to fight if you want to throw towel then just do so and quit whining about it.

It’ll be reversed by the Ninth Circuit, legislating from the bench. Again.

What did I just get through saying about foolish notions? The youth aren't brainwashed. They have full fledged cognitive abilities and access to all the information you and I do. They chose what they want. They aren't dumb, they are bad. I don't see the point in apologizing for them other than to encourage the enemy.

First of all I do not believe that the rat leadership is anywhere near as moderate as the people who vote for them and will act to pursue their agenda with the open support of the media. Also, I do not believe that there will be the great upheaval you predict if they do this. The margines of support for and against homosexual “marriage” have been steadily closing. Maybe they won’t go for “marriage” immediately but some form of federal “domestic partnership” could pass easily and with little opposition and from there it is a small step to “marriage”.

Secondly, I expect that they will give priority to doing everything possible to ensure that they never lose their majority which would include citizenship for millions of illegals, stifling of political opposition with campaign finance reform, hate crimes laws and the fairness doctrine and confirming judges who agree with them and will rule based on political persuasion and not the constitution. So they could just as easily pass the matter to the federal judiciary and get this enacted from the bench. They will certainly act quickly to pack the courts with their buddies so this might not take all that long to accomplish.

Third, you make assumptions about my beliefs that are quite false. I am not giving up on anything and your little rant at the end of your post is, unfortunately, all too typical of a certain type of freeper who simply opens fire without first pausing to consider the situation. But I can see the signs of the times and they are not encouraging. My main hope is that once they find themselves in the majority the rats will fracture and slow themselves down a bit. They have maintained a unified front while in the minority but this may change. There are many disparate groups in that party and their interests do not always coincide ( such as unions/environmentalists, black voters who generally adhere to traditional values/gay rights zealots).

Fourth, why does anyone assume that the rats will abide by the current senate rules and allow the filibuster to be used to block their agenda? What is to stop them from adopting their own version of the “nuclear option” and leaving the Republicans impotent? The media will not stop them but will most likely give them support and conservative oppostion will be ignored or misrepresented and villified.

My real hope is that things rarely actually become as bad - or good - as they initially appear they will. But sometimes they do. The rats will certainly claim a mandate and will act to put their agenda in place very quickly knowing that such “mandates” have a short shelf life. Rewarding their biggest donors, among whom are certainly homosexuals, will be among the first things they will do.

Good points...Your right, there is no guarantee about the future of this country, even with a Republican president.
You mess with people’s money, children and freedom I GUARANTEE Americans will not sit idly by.However, for the moment, We need to calm down, take it one day at a time and go from there.

I don’t like where this is heading either, but believe me America will be America again. Stop fighting amongst ourselves because that’s what communists thrive on...”divide and conquer”....don’t give into their “tricks”. I for one believe the people will take this country back!!!

I never said I thought the dem leaders were moderate, I don't, I said the majority of people, even though they voted for Bozo, are more to the right then the election would have people believe and that they will fight the "freedom of choice" act, whether they are right or left wing.

I think Bozo will not try to enact extremely harsh laws until the second term, then he will go all out and even attempt to make himself President for life. People will not stand for it, the military will not stand for it, that is why he will try to place as many left wing generals and other officers in command that he can in his first term.

People who do not think an armed revolt will occur with all bozo's BS, simply do not know the American people very well. The people might not win, but they will not go without a fight, period.
