Larry Elder: Barack Obama Did Not Invent Opportunity
OC Register ^ | Wednesday, November 5, 2008 | Larry Elder

"Does Obama's victory, as a black man, make you feel that you can do anything?" Someone asked me that on Election Night.

It is a caricature of America that, pre-Obama, major obstacles blocked achievement. It is equally a caricature that Obama's win suddenly creates opportunity that did not exist before.

Hard work wins, my Dad always told me. My Republican father, who disdained Democrats who "give people something for nothing," taught my brothers and me to work hard, stay focused, live within our means, and at all times avoid self-pity.

That's not exactly right, Democrats give people something for something, their votes..............

I agree, but perception trumps reality in those sorts of situations. If you feel like a loser, you'll fell like a loser. If you feel like a winner, you'll feel like a winner. Look at how people feel in a sports town which just lost a championship vs a town where the team just won. There are plenty of people who are PROUD to be a New Yorker because Babe Ruth played for the Yankees, decades before they were even born.

There are plenty of people who feel like Michelle Obama that they were never proud of America until people started voting for Barack. If that's what it takes to get some people into the pro-America camp, then it will do some good.

I’ve been a fan of Larry Elder for years. He still remains one of my favorite columnist.

Michelle Obama will eventually out herself on the public stage as a vicious American hater while in the White House, its been inside her for so long it has to come out.

Yes! I am so thankful for him. He will probably receive a lot of flack for being so out spoken about BHO. They will call him a traitor

Of course, the liberal-left view of African-Americans is that they are helpless and will not get anywhere in life without a government handout.

Here in 2008.

I think the GOP needs to become more vocal in its belief that we are for a colorblind society and government. We believe that individuals have the ability to succeed, no matter what they look like. The GOP needs to make clear that it’s the party of individuals, not the party of groups. I think that message would appeal to many more non-white individuals than the Dems and their asslickers in the media would care to admit. Yes, conservatives have believed this for a while, but it needs to be communicated more effectively.

Hard work will get you ahead in life. Don’t look for a handout or pity. Be personally responsible. That about sums up the reason I’m a Republican too. Too bad the GOP hasn’t stood for that in a long, long time.

Larry Elder is awesome, him and Michael Steele are shining stars, IMO.

Fox should really consider giving Larry his own talk show instead of Greta Van Sustern

Obama has dupped the entire leftwingnitjobs. Brokaw and pals admitted they really didn’t know anything about his background, as did Rose and his Demoguest. They were chuckling about their ignorance and what no one seems to know about the Messiah. LIARS! The left has supported, lied for and promoted Obama with full knowledge of their own duplicity. I have read blogs that contain the same old hate and venom from the left and calling Conservatives every poison name in the book, did anyone think these miscreants were gracious, at least a little? Let the battle begin and no more makey nice to those skunks, I’ll call them every name and description that fits these perverts and expose Obama every time I find the truth about him. Time to expose the LIARS for what they really are!

There is just as much opportunity pre Obama as after his election. The masses have been conned. Imagine a black man became President under a Republican administration.

I did not want to start another useless Vanity Thread, this looks like a good place to put this.

There is one African American who has never received the recognition he deserves for overcoming obstacles in life, far beyond what Obama claims to have endured.

Justice Clarence Thomas.

He is a man I admire. He is a man of dignity. He is a man of intellect. I love to hear him laugh as he did in his 60 Minutes interview. It is warm, deep, jolly and an indicator of the type of person he is.

I did not see Jesse Jackson weep with joy when he was confirmed. Oprah did not worship him. In fact, many of the African Americans who say finally America has done right by us turned their backs on him.

I admire him as many if us do.

(Just wanted a place to say that)
