Steps down, or falls down?

I'd venture that he was pushed. Can't really see him voluntarily giving up power, can you?

If Byrd can’t finish his term due to health, does WVa. have a GOP governor to appoint a GOP senator?

A Democrat could be brain dead and on life support, and Reid would not relinquish the vote of that position. Until Byrd’s carcass starts to stink, Reid will see to it that he and fat Teddy have voting power in the Senate.

Bad news for West Virginia

The money he has systemically diverted into this state
will likely dry up under Obama

He will be 96 when he runs for re-election in 2012. West Virginians love their Byrd and will re-elect him by a landslide. A whole lot of things and places in West Virginia is named after him.

He's a dimocrat so the dead can vote for a dead candidate. The end justifies the means and all that.

Later, Byrd went on to discuss the 2008 presidential campaign. “I never thought I’d see the day a colored boy became this country’s president,” he said, dumbfounded, shaking his head. “I tell you, it’s a long way away from when I wsa a Grang Dragon Klansmen.”

WV re-elected Democrat Joe Manchin as governor in this election. Obviously there are many possibilities for Mr. Byrd’s replacement if Byrd leaves office without completing his elected term (through 2012). It’s highly likely that a Democrat will replace Mr. Byrd regardless of whether by appointment, special election, or regular election.
