There is some truth in your statement. My have Yankee and Panamian in-laws and the ones from the really "Deep South" are the most conservative and voted for McCain. The ones from Massachusetts insists taxes should be raised and the WOT a failure and, well.. you know who THEY voted for....Our in-laws from Panama are very, very Roman Catholic and equally, very hard working. They however came into this country legally, learned English and took the naturalization test and never made any demands from their adopted homeland. I am very proud to be have such people in this family

You’re right. McCain carried Texas comfortably only because Rural and exurban Whites voted GOP in 80+ percent numbers. The cities have become urban barrios and ghettos with huge Minority populations.
Houston is also infested with a very large “Gay Community” and Northern and California Yuppies. Harris County (Houston), heretofore the largest Republican County in the Nation, was carried by the Dims for the first time in 40 years. (albeit by only 18,000 votes which was more than offset by suburban Montgomery County which went GOP by a more than 80,000 vote margin).
But the fact remains that we are in trouble demographically.
We did manage to get 35% of the Hispanic vote in Texas but if we could find a way to increase that to 40-45% it would take much of the pressure off for a long time. I think that is doable.
