A Texas Longhorns team leader Monday praised the way coaches handled the dismissal of a player who posted a racial slur on his Facebook page about President-elect Barack Obama.
Backup center Buck Burnette left No. 4 Texas on Wednesday for what was announced as an unspecified violation of team rules. Burnette, a sophomore, played in seven games this season.
In a statement to The Associated Press, Burnette apologized and said he made a terrible decision to post a text message he received about Obamas victory that contained a racial slur.
Senior defensive end Brian Orakpo said he considered the dismissal appropriate.
I thought the coaches did a good job on handling the situation, Orakpo said. My prayers are for him, but weve got to move on. Guys got to make better decisions for their future.
Orakpo said players should know their personal Web pages such as MySpace and Facebook can be sources of controversy.
With the way the media and the Internet is evolving, everything you say can get you in trouble, Orakpo said.
Quarterback Colt McCoy, who counted Burnette among his good friends on the team, said it was an emotional decision for the coaches.
I dont really want to talk about it that much but I feel super sorry for him and I think the team does, too, McCoy said. I just told him to keep his head up. Things will blow over, things will get better. Thats a situation thats tough.
Coach Mack Brown said his players are told to be careful about what they post on personal Web pages. Brown would prefer his players didnt have personal Web pages, but says he cant ban them.

Ah, the first amendment is wonderful, ain’t it?
What a dum bass.
Right, isn’t Texas a state institution?
Not SUSPENDED, not DISIPLINED, but DISMISSED...
The kid's not in jail, is he? The Constitution doesn't guarantee the right to play on a football team.
What an idiot.
As I recall from earlier posts, it really WAS a racist statement. On the other hand, plenty of hateful stuff is posted on left wing sites, and nobody is ever punished for it.
Also, note this: “In a statement to The Associated Press, Burnette apologized and said he made a ‘terrible decision’ to post a text message he received about Obamas victory that contained a racial slur.”
In other words, it wasn’t his racial slur, it was some friend’s that he thought was amusing. I don’t know if that makes it better, but it really is a sad business all around.
It may very well have screwed up this guy’s chances for future employment, as well.
So it’s OK to call President Bush Hitler but .....
True. Was he speaking for the school? Was he using the schools server to host his website? Did the team have an official policy for such private behavior?
Indeed. Now, he has to pay for TU out of his own pocket. Wow. Not cheap.
We must not even think negative thoughts about Beloved Leader.
“Coach Mack Brown said his players are told to be careful about what they post on personal Web pages. Brown would prefer his players didnt have personal Web pages, but says he cant ban them.”
OK, Coach Brown says he can’t ban players from having personal web pages, but he can dismiss a player for what he posts on his personal web page.
Hooey.
Teams, all of them I’d bet, have the equivalent of moral turpitude clauses. I’m just sorry racism seems to be the only offense that’s sure to get guys booted. And if the kid didn’t have the brains to realize this would qualify, he’s a moron as well as a bigot.
So, what's the big deal!!
Works for Dims................
Holy smokes. I wonder what would’ve happened if he was playing some old andrew dice clay tapes?
2nd that!
hahahahaaa ... good one :)
ya they can call any white guy any dirty name and its ok.
