State GOP Eyes Rudy As Savior

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a potential 2010 gubernatorial candidate, is being urged to take over the state GOP after a disastrous election that cost Republicans control of the Senate, insiders told The Post.

At the same time, current state GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello, the Nassau County leader widely criticized as ineffective and out-of-touch, is being encouraged to step aside, and is expected to do so by the end of the year, the insiders said.

Giuliani has been told that he has just a few weeks to fill a leadership void that could result in the party splintering into Long Island and upstate factions.

"I know Rudy is being urged to get in and take control of the party," said former state GOP Chairman William Powers, whose tenure during the 1990s saw the election of Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki, and the re-election of US Sen. Alfonse D'Amato.

"The party needs strong leadership, that's for sure," continued Powers, a Giuliani ally.

Upstate NY is shrinking.

Don't you know there are some around here who consider Reagan to be a hard leftist? I am not one of them.

Reagan’s credentials are not in question.

” So, you put a radical Leftist in control.

Brilliant strategy.

/s”

Guiliani is far from a radical leftist! You’d compare him to someone like Obama? How is that exactly? On social issues you’d get little argument from me. But when it comes to crime and economics, Rudy is more conservative than most politicians out there.

Again, I am not promoting him for anything national....the thought makes me cringe....I just think he’d be a great start to kicking a state like NY back into the light.

Nobody else in NY is going to

“You’re kidding yourself.”

Please elaborate as to how I am kidding myself. Who would be better in NY?

I can't advise you. I've left the Republican Party and have been working to establish a new conservative political party in America.

“Strict conservative values” won’t win you any elections in New York State. Absolutely guaranteed. A hard right value set will win you as many votes there as it will in downtown San Francisco.

It's true.

At least the party would still have a base.

Which base do you mean?

For years now, the party has been an uneasy coalition of social conservatives, and fiscal conservatives who were more libertarian socially.

The party has totally alienated the fiscal conservatives with the out-of-control spending of the past 8 years, and hasn't done as much as the social conservatives had hoped either.

I was never a fan of Rudy til I saw him on the campaign trail, defending Sarah.
He was wonderful smacking down Alan Colmes as well.
And all with that affable grin.

May not agree with some of his views but
At least Rudy knows who America’s enemy is
and a proven crime fighter.
