WASHINGTON -- On January 20, hundreds of thousands of people will welcome a new president and his administration as Barack Obama takes his official post in the White House.
The next day-- his first full day on the job--could also be eventful.
Immigration policy groups announced Tuesday that they will organize a mass mobilization of immigrant families and supporters in Washington, on Jan. 21, 2009, in part to welcome the Democratic president, but also to also ensure that humane immigration reform is at the top of his agenda.
The National Capital Immigrant Coalition and the Fair Immigration Reform Movementthe two groups responsible for the nationwide allies in 2006announced plans for the rally at the National Press Club on Tuesday.
This massive mobilization will draw thousands of immigrant families and supporters, said Jessica Alvarez, the coalition president. It will celebrate a new day for America, a new hope for our community. The immigrant community found its voice, its place in this election and we helped elect someone who represents our hopes and our dreams.
And we will be here on January 21, on the first day of the new administrations job, Alvarez said.
About 40 immigrant community leaders, representing various ethnicities, vowed to join forces to carry out the demonstration, which they predicted would draw in the tens of thousands. The 2006 rallies, based on a Day Without Immigrants theme, drew millions in states across the nation. But the following year, the U.S. Senate reached a stalemate and scrapped immigration reform legislation.
Calling on Obama to make good on the promises for more humane immigration policies that drew record numbers of immigrants to the polls last week, the organizers said the president-elects work with immigrants is far from over. They particularly want him to uphold a promise to reverse a deportation-only approach to illegal immigration, and focus on developing policies that would keep families together.
We need to transform the election momentum into policy change momentum, said Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition.
Some of the advocates proposed changes called for Obama to call a moratorium on raids and to use his administrative power to reverse existing Bush policies, such as a rule which penalizes employers that hire immigrants with unverifiable Social Security numbers.
Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration reform, an anti-illegal immigration group, said the federation had no plans to press Obama about immigration just yet because of more pressing crises facing the country.
Mehlman said the group did its own exit polling to see how important enforcement of border security was to legal immigrantsprimarily Hispanic voters, a group that voted 66 percent for Obama..
The data that came out of the polling was that Obama was not elected by immigrants to grant amnesty to illegal aliens, it was primarily confidence in him to fix the economy, Mehlman said.
There are all kinds of things that [Obama] is going to be tied up with, Mehlman added. When he does address this issue, we will be ready.
I hope the fire hydrants are working.
do you suppose they will take advantage of all those illegals in one area and send them packing back to mexico? i will be waiting.....
Congress got nailed pretty good on this one last time.
I wonder if they really have the stomach for the fight again.
Wow, all the millions and millions of Obamazombies wasting no time to make good on all of his promises to take care of them via the tax payer.
Looks like his promise to move to socialism won’t take long at all. (whoops, I meant spreading the wealth)
Isn’t this great! And only the top 3 to 5 percent of the rich are going to take care of us all!
Americans are losing their jobs right and left. With jobs hard to come by, I think there will little tolerance for legalizing illegals and for relaxing our immigration policies.
Illegal con artists promptly flipped the homes among family members for ever-higher prices (duping banks at every turn). KEEP IN MIND THIS IS ONE HOUSE WITH SEVERAL TOXIC MORTGAGES.
With enough stolen money to retire in luxury, the last illegal defaulted and absconded to Mexico leaving banks (and taxpayers) holding the bag. Screwing Americans gets a lotta laughts over tequila shots in downtown Tiujana.
Stupid politicians aided and abetted illegal invasions, copping out of responsibility, figuring US taxpayers would pay the bills. Obama and ACORN made sure illegal criminals got loans.
Let's be sure to thank Pres Obama for the toxic mortgages that led to the Wall Street meltdown--and the neverending billion dollar bailouts.
One Oregon county approved a ballot measure that cracks down on hiring illegals and imposes fines and revocation of licenses and permits. Local police and federal immigration officials must be notified about suspected illegals and must maintain a database of violations. Mandates the use of E-Verify (the free federal program that checks employment eligibility).
Typically the anti-American Civil Liberties Union will challenge the measure. Appears the ACLU is obsessed with perpetuating second-class citizenship for individuals who respect the law.
Perhaps the ACLU will next force on us activities like drug-running, illiteracy, serfdom, slavery, ruling elites, armed street patrols, mob rule, bribery as a way of life----to keep the US on a par with Third World thuggery.
Are you kidding??? This is one of the very first things that will happen--full amnesty with voting rights for all illegals. Thus assuring Democrat Congressional majorities and Presidents indefinitely (30 million strong new Democrat voting bloc).
The anti-Bush people would bring 2000 people to DC and get lots of coverage. The anti-Obama people could bring a million and CNN viewers would never know it was happening
"At first glance, Obamas selection of Rahm Emanuel for chief of staff bodes poorly for the prospects of patriotic immigration reform. Emanuel has a F lifetime grade from Americans for Better Immigration with a terrible record in every single category... Emanuel has shown enough himself to be politically astute enough to recognize that amnesty is a losing issue, and unscrupulous enough to work with patriotic immigration reformers.
"As chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Emanuel was instrumental in recruiting candidates...to run in conservative districts and had no problem with them taking a hard line on immigration.
"Then as chair of the of the Democratic Congressional Caucus...he gave those Democrats a great deal of freedom to take proactive stands for patriotic immigration reform, most notably with Shulers sponsorship of the SAVE Act.
"This upset the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. According to a Congressional Quarterly article last September:
"Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus want more party discipline to stop Democrats from siding with the GOP on measures they view as anti-immigrant. Six times since June, House Republicans have used procedural votes to box Democrats into a corner on various aspects of illegal immigration. Vulnerable Democrats, including 19 freshmen, have voted yes on at least some of those votes.... Hispanic Caucus Chairman Joe Baca, D-Calif., said he met this week with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to press for more unanimity among Democrats. She agrees that we have to start holding a lot of our members a lot more accountable, Baca said, adding that certain members shouldnt be getting free rides when it comes to party loyalty....
"While Emanuel declined to comment...Baca was not happy; and went as far as accusing Emanuel of whipping some Democrats into co-sponsoring the SAVE Act...
"While the average voter may not know enough of the jargon to distinguish between cosponsorship and a discharge petition, they know an amnesty when they see it; and will hold the politicians who vote for it accountable...
Unlike Karl Rove and Grover Norquist, Emanuel understands this. Hopefully, if only for pragmatic considerations, he will encourage Obama not to waste political capital on amnesty."
The overwhelming bipartisan opposition to this the last time around will still make them think twice about taking marching orders from Reichenfuerer Nancy. If they disregard the will of the people in their district and they don't have enough illegals there to overcome that they are out of a very plush job.
Not that I advocate violence (that would be wrong), but that sounds like a 'target rich environment'.
(I haven't sighted in my Mauser in a while, maybe I'll have the opportunity sooner than I thought).

Right there is why these new ‘immigrants’ would be/are lousy Americans! THEIR issue of forcing acceptance of 20 plus million illegal aliens is more important to them than anything else! They can’t wait and can’t be concerned with anything else.
One of the least-publicized aspects of amnesty is that both sides of the political spectrum oppose it---ask Hillary about losing a primary she should have won by supporting drivers' licenses for illegals.
They're already close. An apartment complex near me. But not to worry, our 'little' Police Dept keeps a close eye on them and we don't have any Violent Crime. In fact our village was recognized as, "World's Greatest Community" (in the world) by a TV travel show.
In any case, even if the Frito Bandito's tried anything, I'll be more than ready. I'm arming up very soon to complete my collection.
(Closed a big project and will have extra money for more 'goodies' that Barry and his commies in congress will likely ban.)

I truly, truly, truly hope that you are right, and I am wrong.
