Prop 8 Protests Against Mormons, Other Churches Gets Ugly (Gay Activists At A Mass Call Jesus A Homo
The Bulletin ^ | 11/12/2008 | Joe Murray

Posted on 11/14/2008 7:25:12 AM PST by Laissez-faire capitalist

Although a week has passed since California voters overturned that state's Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage, the state has felt numerous aftershocks as gay rights activists have mounted large-scale protests directed at supporters of Prop 8, specifically the Mormon church.

... Demonstrations outside Mormon temples were reported over the weekend throughout California and more are anticipated nationwide. The Mormon church, however, is not the only Prop 8 supporter coming under criticism for its role in the controversial election, as Catholics and Evangelical churches have seen protests, as well.

An estimated 10,000 gay-rights protesters gathered in San Diego, Calif. outside Saddleback Church. The church is home to Pastor Rick Warren...

... Catholic churches were also protested Sunday, and one protest in Michigan turned ugly.

A group of about 30 gay rights activists from the group "Bash Back!" stormed into Mount Hope Church in Lansing. Mich. and unfurled a large rainbow flag at the pulpit. The group also tried to disrupt the Mass by banging on cans and shouting "Jesus was a homo."

If they can force one part of the government to do it they can use the government to force all churches to perform marriages. It won't end.

Did they attack churches before Prop 8?

*******************

Yes, they did. I recall such attacks beginning back in the 1980's.

Christ never said that there would be no other scriptures.

In fact, Jesus was with God when God created the universe.

Of course. You had better quit. You are over your head on this topic.
And any way, it is time for working together in respect and tolerance. A bigger problem is facing us, in case you hadn’t noticed.

“they can use the government to force all churches to perform marriages.”

You are exactly right. They have already put language in the International Criminal Court statute that could be used to imprison church people who won’t perform same-sex marriages.

Any ‘Church” that would marry two individuals of the same sex is not a Church by my definition as this type of relationship is cleary prohibited by scripture.

I simply meant to suggest that we as Christians enjoy many freedoms because we live in a country where a majority should not be able to impose on a minority. I realize this is not actually the case but should be. Gun owners could end up on the recieving end of this which would also result in violence. I think we should consider this issue carefully.

For what it is worth, I am married in the Christian sense.

‘”The Book of Mormon does not change everything the Gospel says. It is a second witness for Christ”

Not according to Christ. He’s pretty adamant about that.’

I missed the interview, was it Greta Van Susteren that got him to comment on that?

Some Churchs and a few liberal Jewish congregations do it now. Usually they call them something like a commitment ceremony or blessing, but there's no reason a Church couldn't call it a marriage. Whether it's valid within the Church is their business. However none of these marriages/ceremonies pass civil muster. That's what they're after. This is simply a form of intimidation, and as I noted earlier I don't see how is not the desruption of a religious service, which is illegal in most states. Different reason, but here's a thread on a similar protest which has gone on over five years. Worshippers may have to get used to running a gauntlet on Sunday, though I suspect the number of people they'll be offending with this tactic is such that it won't last very long.

But some do, see post 88. Which is their business.

There is a 2nd amendment which establishes the rights of gunowners. There is no identifiable Constitutional right of gay marriage. And if a court invents one, it's indistinguishable from the right to marry ones relatives, or have multiple spouses. Nor is their any natural right to be relied on, in fact that line of thought would argue against gay marriage, though perhaps in favor of allowing polygamy.

Back in the late 60’s, the homosexulal refrain was “just leave us alone, all we want to do is live our lives.” Now, as predicted, it is “do it or else.”

Brings to mind the story about the fisherman's wife....he found the magic fish that granted wishes, and she kept demanding more and more...its a fairy tale come to life.

You are absolutely correct. Jesus was with God when God created the universe. The with part conotates two separate beings.

Smearing church-going folk and causing major traffic tie-ups in major cities is not a good way to win people over to your cause.

Please don’t turn this into a Mormon-bashing theology thread. The attacks against them by the prop 8 people are wrong, and that’s the point of this thread. This is a time, it seems to me, that we need to stand in solidarity.
