A city cop shot and killed a man in a Brooklyn church parking lot Thursday after he threatened to bash her with a folding chair.

"Drop the chair! Drop the chair!" Officer Dawn Ortiz yelled in English and then in Spanish. "Stop!"

But he wouldn't drop the chair or stop, police and witnesses said.

And when he was practically on her, the officer fired once - hitting him in the chest, said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne.

Russian area is more of Brighton Beach. Coney Island is heavily black and Hispanic.

I'd have probably shot the guy too. Swinging a chair is going to bring a lot more momentum than a simple nightstick or ASP is going to be able to block.

From what you have read, could pepper spray or taser worked in this situation? I remain concerned about the tendencies, especially in larger departments to use lethal force over other means, something not seen nearly as much in smaller towns.

Hey This is a banglist thread. One shot and the intended perpetrator is down and out. The shooting should be cheered by everyone! She didn’t spray the room with bullets, she killed him the same way I hope I would have done. In my opinion the lady should get a day off with pay.

The cowardice and gutlessness of your position is not surprising, we've been headed down this road for forty years. A chair isn't even SLIGHTLY a formidable weapon.I have never seen any one use one as such effectivly against me or anyone else. Go out and buy yourself a nice dress.

I hope people don't wonder where Obama, if he pursues his deepest marxist fantasies, will find the thug functionaries to attack the People when they get out of line. YOU'RE IT. You and your kind make me sick.

He then realized he was yelling “Wash your hands, Wash your hands or I will shoot you” in Spanish.

LOL! "He was going for a Tidy Nap!"

police officers in the NYPD do not carry tazers.

Why is that?

Tazers are NOT often lethal. Please cite your evidence. Tazers are extremely safe but not all departments use them.

Police still use batons, pepper spray, tazers and even bean bag (bullets) guns.

“Man swinging chair” sounds like the title of a famous painting.

I would say 70 deaths a year is “often lethal”. The threshold for firing a taser is so much lower than for firing a gun, yet the lethality is not THAT much reduced. Someone with a heart condition would probably be better off being shot.

“70 people died in the United States after being shocked with Tasers in 2006, according to the Amnesty International 2007 annual report.”

Amnesty International???

Bwhaaaahaaaahaaaa.

You came her to quote Amnesty International? This isn’t CBS news, we know who AI is and how reliable anything they have to say about America is.

Amnesty International! Losers and liars.

BTW, you are wrong about heart disease and tasers. The brief electrical jolt is unlikely to cause a fatal arrythmia in someone with heart disease. Hypovolemic shock associated with blood loss is very likely to kill someone with heart disease.

“That is a totally degrading stmt of the LEO’s in this country.”

If the shoe fits...

Snuffing out a human life because some nut, bad actor, deranged person or one of the many variables is swinging a chair is nuts or cowardly. If I were on the jury of a citizen who’d done this they may be in some trouble—much less a cop.

“and it wasn’t a guy swinging a chair. it was a guy swinging a weapon in a threatening manner towards a female officer.”

Right. I’m going home without a scratch and I don’t care who I have to kill to do it. That really is a pathetic attitude and typical of the current crop of “officers”.

If someone comes at you swinging a metal chair, then don’t shoot him! Let him beat you to death with it instead. It was a lethal weapon.
