A city cop shot and killed a man in a Brooklyn church parking lot Thursday after he threatened to bash her with a folding chair.

"Drop the chair! Drop the chair!" Officer Dawn Ortiz yelled in English and then in Spanish. "Stop!"

But he wouldn't drop the chair or stop, police and witnesses said.

And when he was practically on her, the officer fired once - hitting him in the chest, said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne.

How was this chair swinging the man?..... By the seat.

Then it was definitely a homophobic hate crime......

It’s easier just to whack the guy than try to reason with a madman.

I wonder if a male officer would have needed to shoot him or if this guy is another victim of the push to hire female officers?

Sounds more to me like he was merely a victim of his own stupidity.

Who’s to say?...Anyone who understands sexual dimorphism. It is very, very unlikely that the coppette could have “handled” this guy physically.

I think you’re right. Uh, perhaps you can back out of the chairs range? I wasn’t on the scene and so cannot really know what happened, but suspect you’re correct.

Exactly. I’m sorry, you’re threatening an armed cop with a chair, advancing on the the cop while being warned several times, and when you’re finally on top of the officer the officer shoots.

Seems pretty much a darwin award thing. I doubt most male officers would prefer to get into a physical fight with a chair wielding, probably large, suspect.

We definitely need a three day waiting period for folding chair purchases............

Bingo....we have a winner. If a cop with a nightstick couldn't use nonlethal force to subdue a guy swinging a chair they failed the qualifications test.

I remember reading a crime novel and they were talking about Russians in and around that area ... in any case, the LEO only said “stop” in English and Spanish? She should have been more multi-lingual ... did she try Cambodian???

The idea that she could have retreated a bit ... she has body armor ... I’m thinking that LEO’s react more with guns than finesse ... it also seems that when they come to a house they shoot the family dog first before they ask questions and nine times out of ten they’re at the wrong house to begin with ....

I’m no feminist, but after the slam on the lady officer and all officers that protect our citizens every day, I have to comment.

There is not enough information in this article to make any determination on this event. There will be an internal investigation and we will know whether is was necessary or not.

I have nothing but respect for all law enforcement officers 60 years ago and today, but we live in different times. Sometimes I think it would be much easier to patrol the streets 60 years ago, but Police Work is vastly different now, so I just don’t see a comparison.

I'd have probably shot the guy too. Swinging a chair is going to bring a lot more momentum than a simple nightstick or ASP is going to be able to block.

"i am a cop in that dept. i am 6’3”, 210 pounds. i would have shot the guy too."

Then you should turn in your gun and badge and find another line of work because this citizen (and combat infantry vet) doesn't believe that officer safety is the highest priority for police officers. If you canbothered to read the article you would have seen the witnesses quote that this wasn't the case of a single officer cornered and in fear for her life:

"We were surprised he tried it because there was a whole police unit there."
