Firearms scare almost everybody. But no demographic gets more wiggy about handguns, shotguns, and rifles than journalists. Ever since the Washington Post ("Gun Sales Thriving in Uncertain Times," Oct. 27) put the idea into circulation that the election and economic turmoil were spurring an increase in gun and ammo sales, a score of other news outlets have published their takes on the topic.

His point is that the media has done it's usual slip-shod research and is trumpeting the results. Which, as usual is meaningless as stated. Big surprise there!
However he does take a closer look at what is really going on. Worth a read in your spare time.
Interesting......
Thanks for finding this.
Good read. Thanks.
Pretty soon the economy will be great , Foreign policy will be at a new high and America will be #1 again . All this fro 20 day in office of the Obamanation ...
Why is a 9% bump in applications such a fearful thing, it's only people that want to get kinds of guns that they fear Obama might try and make illegal.
If the media is worried about danger from spreading gun ownership, that's pure BS.
One can be killed just as easily with a 12 guage shot gun — actually more easily with adrenaline pumping — than an AR15...ANY scoped hunting rifle can pick somoeone off from longer distance. The media is screaming -- BUT -- they don't know what they are screaming about.

Depressing and accurate
In conversations with fellow customers, as we all waited, I determined that people were not just concerned about “the One’s” gun ban threat, but about his socialist bent. In Oklahoma, site of the worst domestic terrorist attack in U.S. history, that was a revelation. Oklahomans definitely plan to fight back.

I’ll have to back you up. Hubby & I and three friends are starting to stock up. With us, it’s sort of something we’ve been meaning to purchase, now it’s taken on a new urgency. I’m certain we’re not alone.
When some a-holes tell us that we’re being greedy & unpatriotic for not wanting to support an ever-increasing welfare state, we figure we may as well spend ourselves silly on things that may be useful in the future.
CheaperThanDirt? Not so cheap anymore. .223 / 5.56 ammunition has literally doubled in price in the last two weeks. (Example, Wold 5.56 55gr FMJ was 5.69 / 20 ... now 11.60 a box). I personally think that the manager of CTD's internet store is busy gouging on it, but it's his business model.
Went to Cabela's, had one gun counter attendent on a (stupid) tirade that people were just panicking and buying 223 left and right. Then he asked me what I was looking for. .223 ... he at least had the grace to blush.
Bulk ammunition is COMPLETELY gone at that store. 3 pallets went in one day (from the same attendent).
I did find a nice selection of Fiochi 223 FMJ though. The 30 dollar off coupon really helped cut the price to about .40/round.
Anyone interested can get a nice coupon HERE
Virtually NONE of those applications will be filed by those with premeditated criminal intent, any more than a bank robber would buy a new car in his/her own name for a getaway car.
In other words, nonapplicants are the usual suspects.
Hey, a POSITIVE meaning to ‘your papers, please.’
Who knew?
Hubby and I are buying anything we think we may need or want in the next 4 to 8 years. I mean, we are going crazy. I am buying any Christmas decorations, Christmas presents, luxury big ticket items (a 40 in. TV for the bedroom, etc.) extra nonperishable food, extra clothing, right NOW! After Jan 20, I am taking a vow of poverty. (For me, that is hard core. I’m a great “consumer”!) I won’t buy ANYTHING that is not absolutely necessary for survival—food, essential clothing, house payment, etc. Let the “consumer confidence index” be damned, AFTER Jan. 20! I refuse to support a socialist, period.
Okay, that’s crazy. I’m doing the same thing. It’s so contrary to what everyone else seems to be doing, but dammit, we’re such savers, and I’m truly not confident on our savings being there soon, so I figure I may as well get what we need now. Andlike you, I’m getting non-parishables, clothing, decorations. I’m going crazy (for me, probably “normal” for people who spend beyond their means on a regular basis— you know, the “working families”. And yes, after Jan 20, we’re shutting down. And I’m TELLING people why I’m shutting down.
So, I_like, I guess we are not as unusual as we initially thought!
“ANY scoped hunting rifle can pick somoeone off from longer distance.”
They’re very aware of this. That’s why your scoped hunting rifle will be designated as a “sniper rifle” and seized accordingly.
The media/pols are afraid people will realize it’s a “use ‘em or lose ‘em” situation.
I joined the gun of the month club several months ago. I am stocking up on Ammo too. I simply do not trust the Democrats with anything relating to our God given rights.
And I am not keeping the bulk of it in my house.
But perhaps Obama will have a change of heart. I am praying for that. If he does it would be a blessing, and one heck of a surprise.
Replaced stove and fridge and one computer. Second computer next week. Ammo every week, powder, primers, reloading equipment updated. Saving all brass and we have a source of lead into the next century. Nonperishables are on a bi-monthly rotation. Hunting season opens next week and I have two freezers 1/2 empty and room in the fridge freezer. I bought other items over the summer. One of my hobbies is container gardening and I have tomatoes flowering and just replanted lettuce. We bought a new wood stove for the shop to keep the propane purchases down. It has been warm, so far, so our firewood is more than adequate. We have doubled our usual supply of gasoline. It is stabilized and we use it and replace on rotation, which is working out well, with the lower price.
As to guns, we have a friend with a FFL. DH sold him two guns, got a good deer rifle, much ammo and about $600 in cash in return. Those two guns were probably the very best investment we have ever made, barring some bonds in the 90s. Majority of our guns are not registered, as we have had them a long time or they were private sales.
Business is way off and we will qualify for whatever programs, if they actually materialize. We will take it and stash it, not stimulate this economy.
My luxury is a monthly house cleaner team. If they weren't wonderful women who are conservative, I would have fired them months ago. As it is, I will keep them as long as I can afford it.
And I am in a blue state.
I will most definitely lie if a pollster calls me up and asks if I own or have a recently purchased a gun.
I say "me no own nasty guns" :)
