I am seriously thinking of taking to steps to go to a survivalist approach planning to survuve total chaos and financial and institutional break down. Some one please help me see why this is not going to happen. Thanks
I, for one, cannot give you any, let alone good reason as to why you should’t
Nothing wrong with planning for the worst. If things turn out OK you’re good, if they don’t you’re prepared. No loss.
Wise plan.
Get busy.
Regardless of today’s events, you should ALWAYS “have a plan” ...
I think everyone should already have such a plan in place regardless of who’s in office because you never know when natural disaster, severe economic downturn, terrorist attacks, or whatever might strike and leave the infrastructure in chaos. Start planning ahead and store up extra non perishable food and bottled water and water purifying equipment, over the counter medicine, ammunition, and other survival necessities gradually. Go visit a Gander Mountain or other such sporting goods store, they usually have some real good stuff for survival situations.
Can’t help you.
Nope, sorry but I dcn't think of a single "Positive" reason not to prepare. Lots of negatives if you don't but no positives.
Rotate the Y2K stash each time ennui and angst strikes.
Remember the Boy Scout motto.
I have to take this to another thread.
Maybe the French could help you.
If you need something, just call Barack./sarc
Ammo never goes bad, and freeze dried chili gains a certain charm with time.
I thought this thread might be a joke but apparently FR does have its share of conspiracy theorists/survivalists. Why would anyone think that the election of Barack Obama would lead to a complete breakdown of social order? I realize that his election is a bad thing but it isn’t so bad that we should all start running to hills.
Thanks for making me laugh out loud :)
Je survuve. Peut-etre tu ne survu pas!
Argentia meltdown, but was part of his advice.
Excuse me,I have to go try some chili.
Tops on the list would be plenty of ammunition and plenty of bottled water.
Beyond that, I would be thinking about how to teach myself to load my own ammunition [and how to cast my own lead], and how to purify my own water.
To their credit, the Mormons keep a list of things which they are required to have on hand:

It’s wise to prepare for the worst. In fact, it would be irresponsible not to, especially if you have a family.
Preparedness is a good thing. Even if the worst doesn’t happen you’ll be in good shape for garden-variety disasters such as earthquakes and pandemics. Just don’t buy anything with a short shelf life.
If I were you, I would put back $700 billion or so for a rainy day.
It doesn’t hurt to keep a few weeks’/months’ worth of frozen and canned foods, bottled water, and powdered milk, etc. on hand. I am starting to do this, getting extra when I shop. This would be good in the event of a disaster or severe inflation. I am a huge Glenn Beck fan, and he recommended this.
SHTF scenario..................... Like when everybody who has no food or supplies stockpiled, lives their daily lives with $7 in their pocket, 3 credit cards and atm card, then finds out that the banks have closed overnite and ..........
There’s one thing some of us can’t prepare for. Prescribed medications needed for survival. And that sucks!
I wish I had access to a rural area where I could earn a living. I have a feeling we’re going to need to grow our own food before too long.
You definitely need to be armed. If you have food and others don’t, you’ll need to hold them off for as long as you can. Is that crazy thinking? I don’t know.
Get ready!

There’s only one thing that I can see that will stop this, and hopes for that are slim and none. Birth Certificate
There... i said it... whatever chaos it brings, it cannot be any worse than what you have accurately predicted.

One should always plan for shtf. The degree to which one’s preparations fall outside normal daily function depend on the situation. Planning and prep are never a bad thing. By taking an objective look at your current situation, what would be needed for continued function (continuity of operations, or COOP), and the difference between the two can shed some light on one’s needs and requirements.

“... freeze dried chili gains a certain charm with time.”
I knew a guy once who said the same thing about the ham and eggs C-rations.
This is not a SHTF mode, this is a normal mode for responsible living.
It's just that large segments of our society has never been taught it, forgotten it, or does not want to be responsible for themselves.

Latest fron Peter Schiff says that your worries are well founded.
Gold, Lead, and Scotch, a sound investment strategy.
Please excuse the triplicate post. I didn’t see the first two, then they all appeared. Just wish I’d said something important!
A bunker, a couple of car batteries, episodes of Monty Python’s Flying Circus and several hundred cans of spam ought to tide you over the apocolypse. Spam spam spam...
I’m canning pork I got for $1.00 lb as I type just for this scenario. Cheaper than Spam.
LOL -
I’ve seen folks read all this news of gloom and doom and get so caught up in it all many times.
There is need to be concerned with the things going on, we need to apply pressure where pressure is needed and of course you should be prepared to fend for yourself but not to the point where rational thought goes on vacation.
Just remember, the sun will rise in the east tomorrow and you still have to get up and go to work.
That might be pushing it, but I’ve not been 3-day hungry for many a year.
ditto Gander Mountain

The Fox Fire books are also a good source for this type of information.
Hint for inexpensive storage, Reynolds or ziploc vacuum storage systems. Renolds takes batteries and performs better, ziploc does not.

Are you truly that naive?

If you really intend to go survivalist, what are your plans about where you’ll do this. All the guns, ammunition, water and non-perishable foods won’t do you much good if you live in the city or suburbs. Do you have a place where the mobs or whatever can’t easily find you? If not, and you’re serious, your first step is to find a hiddy-hole. Depending upon where you live, that can be very easy or very difficult.
Agreed. We’ll be back up and running in a few years.
And that’s a lot of our problem. We can’t make a living in Podunk, Arkansas. If we could we’d all move there and it, too, would become a big city.
This has nothing to do with Barack on more to do with our Affirmative Action economy. I know local auto dealers that are fearing they are going to have to close down.
Allow for the possibility the electric power will be out.
