Annie, get your gun

On the Presidential campaign trail, two of America's most reactionary gun-grabbers - Joe Biden and Little Lord Fauntobama - promised that they wouldn't take away "your guns." And they weren't lying.

Mostly.

For now, it appears they only want to take away gun shop owners' guns. You see, they can't take guns from you they didn't allow you to own in the first place, now can they?

According to his website, our present-day Cedric is champing at the bit to reinstate the assault weapons ban.

AN ASSAULT WEAPON IS NOT A MACHINE GUN

For those who don't know, an "assault weapon" is basically anything that looks scary.* There's no real functional difference between an assault weapon and any other of dozens of rifles that do not – and did not – fall under the ban. In fact, assault weapons are generally less powerful than any number of hunting rifles.

Example: the AR-15 – what we now call the semi-automatic (single pull, single bullet) version of the military's M16 and M4 automatic rifles – fires a .223 caliber round. Deer hunters often can't even use rifles firing that round because it's too small to reliably fell their game.

Contrary to what Progressives tell one another, only a hunter who is joking will tell you he needs a machine gun to go hunting four-legged game. Hunters don't want to spray little bullets that won't kill their targets while scaring off everything over a mile, including their buddies. If they're going to hunt, they want one good, clean shot. It's proof of skill and more humane.

The assault weapons ban is a long-march tactic to push for more restrictions on the right of women to level the playing field with rapists, for gays to defend themselves against bashers, for the elderly to resist "youths," for the oppressed to resist the oppressors, or for our teenage children to resist intruders while they're home alone.

BUY MORE GUNS. IT ANNOYS PROGRESSIVES

So with that in mind, and Democrats – as usual, out of theirs – it's time to stock up on assault weapons and ammunition. Wednesdays are a good day to visit your local gun store: the 3-day background check will make it convenient to pick up your Liberty Tool on the weekend.

Coincidentally, this Wednesday is like May Day for people who don't hate each other's liberty. It's the 7th Annual National Buy Ammo Day.

I like to think of it as the 7th Annual International People's Buy Ammo Day, but that's just me.

Check with your local gun shops or look online for deals on all your favorite bullets. Ask your friends what kind of bullets they need, and pick up an extra box for them, too. (They're so pretty and shiny. And they make great stocking stuffers, so long as you don't actually use the fireplace. You know what also makes a great present? A conceal-carry class.)

Do it for the oppressed. Do it for the children. Do it because it was a bullet (and several of its friends) that prevented us from having to watch Che Guevara die of old age. Do it because nothing scares and irritates people who don't want you to be free from their meddling more than the reality that liberated, armed people have the final veto.

Remember to keep your ammo in a cool, dry place. Rotate the old ones out like milk. If you have kids, be responsible and educate them. Obey the law, but don't be bashful: you can burn up a lot of rounds at the range in a single day.

In fact, you should. Take classes if you're a rookie and spend rounds at the shooting range. That way, if that ugly day ever comes, you can make every shot count.

++

*Progressives: please don't take my word for it. If you think the assault weapons ban is going to take evil, nasty, tank-killing fully-automatic weapons off the street for our children, then it stands to reason those weapons would be available now. Show a little moral and intellectual backbone and have a field trip at the same time: pick a gun shop at random and go see if you can find any such weapons. Pick all the gun shops, if you like. Then come back and let us all know what you find.

Another little factoid:
The AR-15 is not a “civilian” version of the “military” M-16.

The AR-15 was the rifle Armalite designed. It then took the name M-16 for the automatic military versions.

This is true of just about every rifle out there (as opposed to full-auto machine guns)...historically there are very few weapons designed for “foreign battlefields”. Most rifles are civilian owned and the best ones are chosen after years of solid service to be used by military groups.

A lot of newspapers and TV stations online make it hard to tell what city or state they are in.

For most practical purposes, saying “the AR15 is the civilian version of the M16” is correct.

Further analysis is picking at nits.

If we pick at nits, let me add that the AR15 was originally full-auto. M16 was simply the military name for the AR15. It was sold to civilians AND military, only with different markings. Sub-models were sold to both, with minor variations. The third selector position was eventually dropped from models sold to civilians, and incremental changes were made to totally eliminate full-auto capability from those continuing to be labeled AR15. So yes, today the AR15 is the civilian version of the M16.

Nothing. I knew of the Washington Examiner, Bill Sammon's home after he left The Washington Times. Appparently, I signed up with the Examiner.com at some point in the past, but every time I stumbled into it, it showed up as:

Is it true that it’s very simple to convert an AR15 to fully automatic?

It's impossible.

Because even thinking about it constitutes what the BATFE calls "Conspiring to violate Federal firearms laws."

No, it is not true.

You have to swap out several major components with M16 parts, and remove a large chunk of metal from & drill holes in the most important part, to do a proper (i.e.: safe) conversion. There are a few shortcuts (the legendary "DIAS" device) that could be taken, but those are decidedly NOT "very simple", and the relatively easiest ones (using a file) are dangerous (runaway slamfires) and strain the limits of what is legally termed "fully automatic" (auto-fire two rounds then jam). AR15s have long been built SPECIFICALLY to make full-auto conversion rather difficult.

An experienced gunsmith with a milling machine can probably make the conversion without much difficulty ... but then doing so requires being an experienced gunsmith with a milling machine, who could do the same to a VW Bug.

Oh, BTW: Doing so would put you in violation of federal law 922(o), costing you a $250,000 fine and 10 years in prison. On the scale of what crimes the federal government takes seriously, this one is very near the top of the list, beating out general murder by a long shot.
