I've read of Dutch-American farmers in the early 20th century who literally ate pure lard, smeared on bread. The difference was that people on farms in those days worked , and very hard, for most if not all of the daylight hours, taking time off only on Sunday, where they spent several hours in church. No one sat on his/her butt for hours watching junk TV while eating junk food. People who hike the Appalachian trail in one fell swoop develop tremendous hunger and sometimes pig out on huge helpings of stuff like ice cream when the reach civilization now and then, but most lose large amounts of weight. Most people are very soft today, and exercise very little.
