I hope Duncan Hunter runs for U.S. Senator. We need more CONSERVATIVE U.S. Senators.
Should have ran in 1998 and he would be President now.
Sorry, Kimberly, I know Chuck personally and he is probably far more conservative than you, me, or Reagan. Do your homework and check him out online.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I was not referring to your comment about Chuck. I didn’t mention his name because I was referring specifically to this part of your statement:
“GOPers to be successful must be telegenic and cool. That’s how they will get votes from middle-of-the-roaders who are otherwise inclined Democratic.”
I believe that attempts to do exactly that (like so many here did in their push for Fred Thompson, for instance), was dividing and a disaster. Abandoning conservative roots by pushing a candidate who, instead, is attractive to the middle of the roaders is, IMO, a mistake that cost us dearly.
Thanks for clarifying but it’s a reality these days that a successful GOP candidate needs to be cool. Otherwise he’ll be destroyed by the Leno/Letterman/Colbert/The View crowd. He doesn’t have to necessarily abandon his conservative principals but he needs to have an almost indescribable appeal beyond principals in order to win. Why do you think Clinton won? Or Obama? Bush won twice in spite of not having this type of cool appeal, by small margins, only because of evangelical Christians. But our next conservative leader needs this kind of appeal, however it’s packaged, in order to really snare the citizens with “change” they really want like greater freedoms, abolishment of the IRS (or more realistically, radical tax simplification), etc.
Hunter the Elder should run for something statewide, Governor or Senator, and persuade/change California in the process on key issues like Fair Trade, Pro-Family, and Immigration Control. Good way to revive the California GOP. Might win too, and greatly raise the profile of those issues Nationally.
Hopefully his father will run for governor of CA. Then he could run for POTUS after he has straightened out CA.
