Obama Favors Republicans With Scowcroft Ties By YOCHI J. DREAZEN and SIOBHAN GORMAN
WASHINGTON -- Many of the Republicans emerging as potential members of the Obama administration have professional and ideological ties to Brent Scowcroft, a former national-security adviser turned public critic of the Bush White House.
Mr. Scowcroft spoke by phone with President-elect Barack Obama last week, the latest in a months-long series of conversations between the two men about defense and foreign-policy issues, according to people familiar with the discussions. [Brent Scowcroft]

The relationship between the president-elect and the Republican heavyweight suggests that Mr. Scowcroft's views, which place a premium on an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, might hold sway in the Obama White House.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who was deputy national-security adviser under Mr. Scowcroft in the George H.W. Bush administration, is almost certain to be retained by Mr. Obama, according to aides to the president-elect. Richard Haass, a Scowcroft protégé and former State Department official, could be tapped for a senior National Security Council, State Department or intelligence position. Mr. Haass currently runs the Council on Foreign Relations.
Other prominent Republicans with close ties to Mr. Obama include former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who endorsed the Democrat in the final days of the campaign, and Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"I think most of my close associates have a generally similar view," Mr. Scowcroft said in an interview. "What's the old story about birds of a feather?"
Mr. Scowcroft said his biggest piece of advice for the new administration was that it should make a renewed push to help broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. He also endorsed Mr. Obama's call for diplomatic engagement with Iran.

Doesn’t scarecrow Brent have roots in Salt Lake City?
Well if Gates is retained perhaps the sodomy in the military drive will at least be put on hold a while. We’ll see what happens to the women in infantry drive.
Funny how detractors of Bush Defense policies are tabbed “realists” and “pragmatic”.
They're known as traitors
Gates is going to be there for less than a year and will take the fall for something. He will be replaced in short order by Gen. Westley Clark or someone similar to him.
The Scowcroft-Powell-Hagel-Lugar “wing” of RINOs has been in favor of soft-headedness all along..... they favor “engagement” with Iran???? Guess what, there’s been tons of “engagement” via the Europeans, the UN, IAEA, etc. and there’s never been the slightest reason to believe that the Mullahs will relent in their drive for nuclear weapons and missile delivery systems.
The RINO wing favors more of the b.s. “peace process” with the Palestinians? Guess what, there’s been lots of “peace process” and no peace because the Palis don’t believe in any “2-state” solution, they seek the destruction of Israel.
It’s funny that a bunch of self-styled “realists” in foreign policy can be so consistently naive....
Love every single story like this. It must drive the koss-hacks and the DUmmies crazy.
At any rate I have not noticed anything alarming these first days. Its been pretty uneventful. I think he is at least attempting to unify by selecting a diverse cabinet with somewhat differing positions from his own.
Again he has been somewhat of a radical in his past politics. I dont think this will fly in today's climate. He knows the economy is heading south, like Depressionsville south and he will need bipartisan assistance to solve these complex problems.
Can they finally just leave the Republican Party so the rest of us can go about returning it to a conservative party (and rebuilding)?
lol!
Republican heavyweight? LOL.... most Republicans and 99.9999% of the public do not know who is Scrowcroft.
Is this where stupid ideas come from??? Former diplodunks with lots of pull?
Ummm, the other "member" of the Scowcroft wing is the journalist who invented this concept...
I’m going to demand that the local Wal-Mart stock Scowcroft ties. They didn’t have any on the rack the last time I was there. It’s hurting my chances to land a job with the Obama administration.
Isn’t there a wing of the Republican Party that is bought and paid for by the Saudis?
It won't be funny when Iran gains control of the Straights of Hormuz.
This is exactly where these soft approach A$$ HATS are headed. If you want to see the product of their approach in your minds eye, think Jimmy Carter.
Carter was backed into a corner so fast by the Iranians, that all he had left was a military option he would not chose to use.Obama may chose it out of desperation, after he has been led around by the nose and US interests in the ME are completely circumscribed. Obama is weak. And the weak get attacked. That message has not been lost on the Russians, Iranians, Chinese,Pakistanis, Talibanis , AL Qaeda or the Wahabis. Our allies are somewhat nervous.
Obama is about to becoime a floor mop.
“I wasn’t aware of the Scowcroft wing of the Republican party..........”
ROFL ... Well, get ready for the Scowcroft wing of the Democrat party ... the peacenik left is going to cr*p bricks if he ends up being an advisor to Obama.
I’m afraid that you cynicism is warranted. The good news is that I’m hearing next to nothing about Chuck Hagel...sour grapes Chuck...and now, fade to obscurity.
The socialist re-engineers have their priorities, and gays serving openly in the military probably rates above winning against Al Qaeda in their book. The former will certainly happen before the latter.
