Theo Caldwell on The Bush Legacy: Too soon to judge
National Post ^ | November 24 2008 | Theo Caldwell

It is the easiest thing in the world to criticize President George W. Bush. So simple and widespread is condemnation of the man that, when one hears some concerned citizen spouting the usual lines about “lies,” “war for oil” and the like, one wonders what that person thinks he or she is adding to the public discourse. It has all been said before, and it was dopey the first time.

What is far more difficult — harder, even, than finding someone to sing Bush’s praises – is to find intelligent analysis of Bush’s successes and failures as leader of the free world. His foreign policy forays, like the Iraq war, and his domestic policies, like the prescription drug benefit, bear serious scrutiny. But since folks start hyperventilating at the mere mention of Bush’s name, it seems sober discussion must wait until at least the end of his term.

"In truth, the current debacle finds its roots in the misbegotten mortgages mandated by president Carter’s Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, if not president Roosevelt’s creation of Fannie Mae as part of the New Deal. But as the man at the top when the bad news came down, Bush bears much of the burden"

Bush stopped effectively defending himself against the left wing democrats, and therein lies his fault for his unpopularity. That’s without even addressing the substantive things for which he might deserve unpopularity.

We have been kept safe for the years after 911 when we had a ruthless enemy anxious to hurt us again...and worse.

There are two Islamic nations in the world who have never known freedom who know it today with upwards of 60 million people free. The implications in that part of the world are mind boggling and good for western republics and freedom for the next several generations and more if we take advantage of it.

His supreme court picks have been good at a critical juncture.

Most of his presidency, outside of the last few months where he faced serious issues in housing and on Wall Street not of his making, and stymied by the democrats in congress to do anything about it...were unbelievably good economically with low, low interest, low, low unemployment, and growth.

For anyone taking an objective look, and despite the rabid rantings of the liberals and democrats, and the running and hiding of RINOs in the GOP, it is not hard to assess Bush in the least...and that assessment, IMHO, historically will be very good overall.

This does not mean he did not make mistakes...campaign finance, social spending, immigration, etc.

But when comared to what is coming, those mistakes will pale in comparison, and the good he did will also be erased by bad policies as bad, if not worse, than the Carter years which gave rise to the misery index for all Americans.

OBAMA, THE STOCK MARKET, AND ENERGY

It is not only Bush's resonsibility to defend himself. It's typical for people nowadays to look only to the top as though we have a king.

One man cannot defend the entire GOP movement and policies. It's up to the whole GOP, including the grassroots who often like to spend all their time stabbing their own in the back.

I truly believe that a day will come when we will all wish that we had George W. Bush back in office...

here in the country we are seeing Government controlling our hunting season and the wild critter have more RIGHTS than humans...and one wonders how our founding fathers survived with out Government controlling....

I fear for the future of my adult children and grandchildren..
