Harry Reid told the Detroit Free Press that he expects comprehensive immigration reform to be passed relatively early in the next Congress:
Q. With more Democrats in the Senate and the House and a Democrat in the White House, how do you see congressional efforts playing out on such issues as health care and immigration?
A: On immigration, there's been an agreement between (President-elect Barack) Obama and (Arizona Republican Sen. John) McCain to move forward on that. ... We'll do that. We have to get this economy stuff figured out first, so I think we'll have a shot at doing something on health care in the next Congress for sure.
Q: Will there be as much of a fight on immigration as last time?
A: We've got McCain and we've got a few others. I don't expect much of a fight at all. Now health care is going to be difficult. That's a very complicated issue. We debated at great length immigration. People understand the issues very well. We have not debated health care, so that's going to take a lot more time to do.
One senator who wields significant influence on the debate is Robert Menendez, and he seems to be pushing ahead on the issue as well. Menendez is no extremist among Senate Democrats, either; he's just been named head of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee. Expect Menendez to lead a push--apparently with Reid's blessing--to get comprehensive reform passed in the first half of 2009. Proponents will argue that while the measure may be unpopular, it's better to swallow a bitter pill far in advance of the midterms. And if it seems that they lack the votes to pass it in the next few months, they'll bargain for a commitment for passage later in 2009.
Obama is not qualified to be president, but he has great political instincts. He realizes that pushing amnesty now would be a political loser. Rham Emanuel has also stated that now is not the time. He will wait until his second term. That's why preventing his re-election in 2012 is so important.

I am skeptical Reid will actually be able to pull it off in the midst of a major economic downturn when people are struggling to pay the bills, too.
Remember that the US had net EMIGRATION, not immigration, during the Depression.

First they will give them greencards. Then after a number of years, they become eligible for citizenship.
The good news is that many probably won't bother to get citizenship since there really aren't any real benefits associated with it any more.
A greencard holder has pretty much the same rights as a citizen, and access to just about all the same entitlement programs. The only real difference is that greencard holders can't vote (at least not legally) and don't have to serve on juries.
I suspect most of the legalized illegals won't care enough about the right to vote to bother becoming citizens and having the burden of jury duty imposed.
This is why, incidentally, all this talk about illegals having to get in the "back of the line" for citizenship is so idiotic. Citizenship isn't all that valuable (unfortunately). The greencard is the Holy Grail, and all the amnesty proposals to date allow illegals to jump ahead in line for the greencard.
Heaven help us. We have traitors in our midst, willing to sell this great country out for the love of a few more votes.

We already know how stupid and anti-American demorats are. We have long known McCain is a rino. The amnesty would happen even if he had won. I guess the moral is to never trust a rino.

I have to wonder if Zero’s forseen what’s going to happen in a screwed economy when Mexicans with green cards take jobs away from low-skilled African-Americans in the cities. I’d advise any conservatives to move away from the fracas, you’ll be able to watch it all on Fox News.
This isn't so much about the illegals working as it is them voting, though working IS part of it. After amnesty is done, the democrats will never lose another national election. Someone please let me know which state will be the first to break away. Alaska would be a good one. Lots of natural resources. Or perhaps an entirely new country can be created out of Montana, Western Canada, and Alaska.

The utter absurdity of all the news lately is just spiining me into the ground. I watched for years as the housing sector led the way in using these illegals and how small American trades contractors were driven out for the cheap labor. That whole poison seems to have spread as the housing “bubble” pumped up and burst. And if a dumbass like me could see it, how do we explain why all these “smart guys” just kept turning up the music?

Just because a few pandering politicans are looking after their own votes, doesn't mean the rest of this Nation has to sit still for it. We'll fight it.
