Castro to Penn: I'm open to Obama

By Patrick Markey in Havana

CUBAN President Raul Castro is open to meeting US President-elect Barack Obama on neutral ground to try to resolve the island's four-decade-old feud with Washington, according to an interview with a US magazine.

Havana's latest overture came in a rare interview for The Nation conducted by US actor Sean Penn, who traveled to Cuba after meeting Castro ally Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and before Mr Obama won the US presidential election on November 4.

"You asked if I would accept to meet with (Obama) in Washington. I would have to think about it. I would discuss it with all my comrades in the leadership," Castro tells Penn in the interview published on The Nation's website.

"I think it would not be fair that I be the first to visit, because it is always the Latin American presidents who go to the United States first. But it would also be unfair to expect the president of the United States to come to Cuba. We should meet in a neutral place."

He suggested the two could meet in Guantanamo Bay, where the United States maintains a naval base, which Cuba considers a violation of its sovereignty.

Castro is now using Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High as a diplomatic envoy.

Cuba is in much more trouble than we ever imagined!

Hussein and Raul could exchange opinions on their favorite passages from Marx.

My prediction is that Obama will normalize relations with Cuba, probably in the first month.

My second prediction is that he will “convince” Castro to accept a very generous rent payment for Guantanamo, probably “convince” him to accept 40 years back payment at the newly increased rate, probably adding up to billions. And then recognize Cuban sovereignty over the base. It will become a joint Cuban/US base. Cuban patrol boats will operate out of the same base with US ships.

The prison will be closed and dismantled. The prisoners will be transferred to third countries. We won’t call it “rendition”. We’ll think of something else to call it.

Thats my prediction. I’m curious to see how far out of whack my crystal ball is.

Would Obama and the Castro brothers strike a deal which would allow Cuban baseball players to play Major League Baseball, and would Cuban cigars also soon be allowed to be legally sold throughout the U.S.?

So bad-boy Sean Penn is our new "ambassador" to Cuba, huh?

I would believe that even Rush Limbaugh would be more than willing to occasionally smoke some Cuban cigars, if he hasn’t possibly already done so.
