GMU Analyst Offers Insight On McCain's 'Big' Mistakes; Hard-Right Appeal, Financing, Palin Cited
The Washington Post ^ | 2008-11-27 | Jennifer Buske

Republican Sen. John McCain made three "big" mistakes while campaigning.

Add those to the fact he had to follow in the footsteps of an unpopular president, and the Democrats were almost guaranteed a win Nov. 4, a political analyst said Friday.

"It was a very unusual election, and almost all trend lines said it would be a Democratic victory," said Jerry Mayer, associate professor at George Mason University's School of Public Policy and director of the master's of public policy program. "It was not your year, Republicans."

He's an "associate professor." That means he probably doesn't really know very much--except how to suck up to the department head.

and the entire MSM in the tank for him

But it really was Bush and the bailout that did it in the end. And Cheney’s last minute endorsement...love the guy but it was the last thing we needed.

So another anointed associate professor speaketh from on high. Forsooth and with alacrity we shall surely heed his words of wisdom.

McCain lost the election because he handcuffed himself to public financing and his opponent didn't. He decided to be the honorable loser.

“This guy is a leftist moron. Joe Lieberman? yeah, Mr. Exitement out there on the campaign trail.”

perhaps one could make an argument for Rudy but Lieberman wasn’t just a moderate; he was also another old white guy.

not honorable to conservatives on principle. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for every loser that wants to run.

Yea he leaned hard right when he told supporters he was mad for them, but I did not see it. I am a die-hard conservative and the only reason I voted for McSame was Sarah and that’s all I got to say!

He never appealed to the right or conservative majority of the party and if he hadn’t picked Sarah he would have lost every state!

She is the samartest and most conservative of all 4 democrat and Republican candidates!

This fellow is awfully hard on Palin for “knowing nothing” and yet he gives His Excellency a pass!

And he says that Liebermann was qualified to be President, (true) but gives His Excellency a pass!

How does this article get any credibility?

“Another evidence of incompetence intellect in an alledgedly “name” university!”

Just FYI, the “allegedly ‘name’ university” has one of the best and perhaps only conservative/libertarian leaning economics departments in the USA. Two of its econ professors have won the Nobel Prize in Economics within recent memory, and another, Walter Williams, is rather well known.

So who’s an ignoramus?

Mister Keyes’ actual reparations proposal required a genealogy to exclude anyone who wasn’t descended from actual American slaves from getting a check, and another to see who was descended from an actual slave owner to see who owed such monies.

I could certainly live with the consternation implementing his proposal would engender amongst the Jesse Jackson crowd.
Especially since my ancestors (west Asian Slavs, Scotch, and Irish) didn’t come over until the 1880s.

So while I didn’t really think the whole thing was necessary, I can see where my immunity from any chance of having had to participate may have made the proposal less odious to me than to others.

McCain received 59 million votes with Palin on the ticket. Imagine how many votes McCain would receive if Leiberman was picked as Veep. Nuff said.

Hey Skippy, McCain was beat by the liberal media and ignorant fools.

He lost, he will not be the president, it is over.
I know the third party loons would rather keep reliving the 08 election so as not to attack Obama who we will be dealing with the next four years.

Well, GMU is succumbing to beltway-think -- that explains the professor's PDS. But the professor is right about the first reason McCain lost -- I also think it was his biggest strategic mistake. And McCain made it years ago. What was it? Campaign Finance Reform.

Still, the perfesser is off his rocker with the beltway affliction in re Palin. Palin was McCain's greatest tactical success.

Wow another article hellbent on convincing us Palin is to blame for McCain losing. This really goes a long way to proving Peggy Noonan’s point about the rascally media trying to make Palin the face of our party. /s

Huh... So much for my relatively high opinion of George Mason University.

I know he’s only an “associate professor” (you wonder how many rocks the Washington Post had to kick over to find this guy) but it is disappointing that GMU would hire a pantload like Mayer in the first place. “Hard right”? Sarah Palin? Well, like they say, opinions are like a-holes and a-holes have opinions.
