Women Smokers Lose 14.5 Years Off Life Span

During Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, female smokers should take advantage of available resources, pick a quit day, and start taking steps toward kicking the habit, urges The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Even though smoking takes an average of 14.5 years off women's lives, almost one in five American women age 18 and older smokes.

"The damaging effects of smoking on women are extensive, well-documented, and can be observed from the cradle to the premature grave," Dr. Sharon Phelan said in an organization news release. She helped develop ACOG's smoking cessation materials for health care providers.

"Smoking is a harmful habit that negatively affects nearly every organ in the body. There's just no good reason not to quit," she said.

Any chance Nancy Pelosi is a smoker? Maybe Michelle will pick up the habit from Barack. :crosses fingers:

As long as you lose it off the end and not out of the middle.... I mean... in my family the women live till 93. I’d better hurry up and start smoking if I want to avoid that.

"Smoking is a harmful habit that negatively affects nearly every organ in the body. There's just no good reason not to quit," she(Dr. Phalen) said.

Then you should quit doctor. Everyone knows about smoking. Stop worrying so much about what everyone else is doing. I'm sure skydivers live statistically shorter lives than non-skydivers. We all have free agency and know exactly what we are doing. I really hate that there are so many people in the country the want to be the nanny to everyone else. Sadly, many of them are in the GOP and have branded us all as people who are obsessed with what everyone else is doing.

My 94-year-old aunt still slips out onto the porch for an occasional Chesterfield.

And their skin turn brownish-yellow, teeth rot, and face go south.

If you don’t believe me, check out my mother-in-law.

George Burns and other people also smoked and lived long lives. It is just that they are outliers ....most people who smoke will expose themselves to health complications later in life.

Now, I would not go to someone and tell them not to smoke. I really don't give a darn what someone else does with their own body (although if it was an enclosed space, and after telling the person to stop twice they still continue, my second request would definitely be a smash to the person's face. That is one of the few things I have no tolerance for). Thus, if someone else wants to smoke they can go ahead and puff all day long.

However, smoking for the average person is one of the most imprudent courses of action healthwise one can take. While there are outliers (people who chug every day and have perfect health), the average person gets hammered eventually.

Not really, it just seems that way. Women who are 30 who have smoked for 15 years appear to be 45. And women who smoke tend to have so many medical problems that they claim to be and to act dead at about 65.

Reminds me of that old joke:

Q: "Why do husbands die at a younger age than their wives?"
A: "Because they want to"

One grandfather died of a heart attack early, the other in his 80’s, a pipe smoker.

Based on historical analysis men who smoke a pipe live longer than those that don't. That is likely because they tend to be wealthier however who's to say their extra wealth isn't the result of contemplative pipe smoking and less time with other vices such as drinking. Smoking a pipe is an enjoyable way to rebel against the nanny-state Nazis.
