Carleton students petition to impeach union president over cystic fibrosis gaffe

Embarrassed Carleton students are getting closer to ousting the members of their student council responsible for a cystic fibrosis gaffe that garnered national attention.

Frustrated by their student council's recent decision to drop a cystic fibrosis charity as the beneficiary of its annual Shinearama fundraiser because the disease "has been recently revealed to only affect white people, and primarily men," Carleton students are attempting to clear their school's name with a petition to impeach their union president.

The motion to change the frosh week charity passed the Carleton University Students' Association council almost unanimously earlier this week, but a national outcry — including a Facebook group to reinstate the charity that has gathered thousands of members — that followed caused the student association to backtrack Wednesday.

CUSA president Brittany Smyth said she was "very sorry for the confusion" and stated that an emergency meeting of the association's council is planned for next Monday evening and she'll be personally trying to rescind a decision to pull CUSA support for the annual "Shinerama" fundraiser.

But despite CUSA's efforts to backtrack on the controversial decision, a student movement has emerged to impeach Ms. Smyth and councillor Donnie Northrup, the science councillor who wrote the motion.

Spearheaded by Carleton's public affairs councillor Kailey Gervais and student Rebecca Gill, the petition drive to remove Ms. Smyth from office has already collected more than 1,000 of the required 1,250 student signatures — 5% of the total student population— in two days of circulation. A separate petition calling for Mr. Northrup's ouster has collected approximately 40 of the 90 signatures required from students in the science faculty.

Glad to see that anti-white racism is alive and well in Canada. Perhaps their stupidly leftist Human Rights Commission will take this as a case and actually persecute (that’s what they do) these racists for their remarks.

Yeah, and polar bears will fly!

CUSA president Brittany Smyth said she was "very sorry for the confusion"...

No confusion at all, you petty little PC tyrant. From now on, this will show up every time someone googles your name.

"councillor Donnie Northrup, the science councillor who wrote the motion."

Which is worse, the student govt. acting upon this moronic PC-nonsense which isn't even based upon actual scientific reality, or the fact that it was the "science" councillor who actually wrote the motion?!?

btw, suppose they had actually been accurate about CF? Are we to accept their standard that a disease is not worthy of charitable fundraising support if it only or primarily affects certain sectors of the population?? No more fundraising for breast cancer? No more fundraising for HIV/AIDS? etc. etc.

As it happens, the students were grossly mis-informed about the populations affected by CF, but even if they had been better informed this was all a stoooopid approach to the issues anyway.

Basically....what we are seeing is a continual trend. Its not just cystic fibrosis...its climate change and global warming...its the explanation of wind energy and solar replacing coal & nuclear power (will never happen)...its the explanations to save Polar Bears...and it goes on and on.

You’ve got an entire generation of people who claim that they went to college and got “smart”....thus earning a “certificate” of some sort. Then they export themselves onto TV and the media as experts. I sit there and listen on rare occasions to the guys they bring on NPR. Some claim certain credentials but then you check their background on the internet...and its marginal at best...yet they act as “experts”.

Its curious what happens if they precede fast enough to impeach the student president...before she rescinds the entire order and offers up an apology. I’m pretty sure by Saturday...everything done previously...will be undone. The student body on Monday might stop their entire effort...because they achieved success. As for this student president...there will be numerous people attending student council meetings over the remaining school year...and watching her every comment. I don’t think she’s really off the hook yet.

Might I suggest Ms. Smyth refuse to accept any medications developed by white males. Also, she might want to avoid any medical procedures developed by white males, too. Obviously, white males must not be equal to others in society, so Ms. Smyth shouldn't pollute herself with the output of such inferiors...
