Here's one...

Cherish is the word I use to describe

All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside

You don't know how many times I've wished that I had told you

You don't know how many times I've wished that I could hold you

You don't know how many times I've wished that I could Mold you into someone who could

Cherish me as much as I cherish you

Perish is the word that more than applies

To the hope in my heart each time I realize

That I am not gonna be the one to share your dreams

That I am not gonna be the one to share your schemes

That I am not gonna be the one to share what Seems to be the life that you could

Cherish as much as I do yours

Oh I'm beginning to think that man has never found

The words that could make you want me

That have the right amount of letters, just the right sound

That could make you hear, make you see

That you are drivin' me out of my mind

Oh I could say I need you but then you'd realize

That I want you just like a thousand other guys

Who'd say they loved you With all the rest of their lies

When all they wanted was to touch your face, your hands

And gaze into your eyes

Cherish is the word I use to describe

All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside

You don't know how many times I've wished that I had told you

You don't know how many times I've wished that I could hold you

You don't know how many times I've wished that I could Mold you into someone who could

Cherish me as much as I cherish you

And I do cherish you. Cherish is the word...

Another good one... Don Henley, "Heart of the Matter."

I got the call today, I didnt wanna hear

But I knew that it would come

An old, true friend of ours was talkin on the phone

She said youd found someone

And I thought of all the bad luck,

And the struggles we went through

And how I lost me and you lost you

What are these voices outside loves open door

Make us throw off our contentment

And beg for something more?

Im learning to live without you now

But I miss you sometimes

The more I know, the less I understand

All the things I thought I knew, Im learning again

Ive been tryin to get down

To the heart of the matter

But my will gets weak

And my thoughts seem to scatter

But I think its about forgiveness

Forgiveness

Even if, even if you dont love me anymore

Anything by Death Cab qualifies as sad, not necessarily as great.

I like Sweet Lorraine by Patty Griffin. I didn't check, is Luka on the list?

Burning House of Love, by X.

Here’s a very old Irish song performed as well as it can be:

Dead Can Dance - The Wind that Blows the Barley.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00177DTD0/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk3/179-9159930-0535918

Unfortunately I couldn’t find a longer sample... This is just a glimpse...

“Abba? That was my sisters department - brother, that is one horrible concoction of schmaltzy cotton candy style music.”

Ummm...guys can like ABBA. I mean, if a guy were to like ABBA, that’s not exactly the same as assuming he wears his wife’s clothing or anything. It’s not like Britney Spears fer goodness sake...I mean I’m just sayin.

I could only watch the 1st and 3rd of those videos. You reckon they're tearjerkers? I was too busy tapping my feet to the decidedly upbeat sound to notice LOL

Has to be sad sounding, you know the deal, violins, chellos, wailing voice, desparing lyrics yadda yadda wassa wassa.

Bon Jovi heartwrenching? go to your room!

Just off the top of my noggin:
Hank Williams, “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry”
and “Stormy Weather” by just about anybody.

Possibles:

Elvis - “She’s Not You” & “Anything That’s Part of You”.

Patsy Cline - “I Fall To Pieces” & “Faded Love”. “Faded Love” is absolutely heart rending. That little catch in her voice, that little gasp toward the end is one of the most poignant notes ever sung.

Sinatra - “A Cottage For Sale” ain’t bad either.

Terrible list. The commenters have all had much better suggestions. I'll just toss out one that nobody's mentioned yet:

"Donald & Lydia" by John Prine. "Sam Stone" off the same debut album is also a heart-ripper, but it's about a drug-addicted war veteran, not two lonely people who never find love, so maybe it doesn't exactly fit the category.

I’ll go with George Jones @ #1. Tracks of my Tears should be up there, although I like the Ronstadt version better. The rest of the list is crap.

Here’s another one I dare you to watch and not get a lump in your throat, if like me, you’ve lost your dad. “I Still Can’t Say Goodbye” by Chet Atkins: http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/ChetAtkins/I-Still-Can%27t-Say-Goodbye—2138979;_ylt=AqfRkNQ4XW.rXQTL18_5ALPesyUv

"I'm Already There" by Tim McGraw...

You're reading this, my mama's sittin there Look's like I only got a one way ticket over here I sure wish I could give you one more kiss War was just a game we played when we were kids Well I'm layin down my gun and hanging up my boots I'm up here with God and we're both watching over you

So lay me down In that open field out on the edge of town And know my soul Is where my mama always prayed that it would go And if you're reading this I'm already home.

A couple of suggestions:

“In My Room” Nancy Sinatra, from the Boots album (not the Beach Boys song), a suicidal song if I ever heard one
“I’m Gonna Be Strong” the late Gene Pitney (Orbison should’ve recorded this)
“Walk Away Renee” The Left Banke
