Boeing seeks racist hiring policy for security needs (Very misleading title)

AEROSPACE manufacturer Boeing has asked for the right to refuse employment on racial grounds within Queensland to comply with US security requirements.

The move is being opposed by Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.

The firm, which is based in Seattle but has operations worldwide, says it has to exclude some nationalities in order to comply with US security regulations.

It was "reluctantly" seeking the exemption from the Anti-Discrimination tribunal.

The countries banned by the US Government are Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Burma, China, Liberia, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Lebanon, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Somalia.

If granted by the tribunal, the exemption sought by Boeing Australia Holdings and three associated companies would allow them to ask questions about potential employees' race and to discriminate based on race.

The title is deliberately misleading. Boeing has no intention of discriminating on the basis of race but following US law that prohibits hiring of nationals of certain hostile foreign countries. I was forced to excerpt, so you'll have to follow the links to read the whole article.

As I recall, Boeing moved it’s headquarters out of Seattle a while ago and is no longer “Seattle based” as the writer claims. Could be wrong, but that is what I seem to remember.

Executive offices and marketing are in Chicago. The vast majority of their US employees are scattered around the Seattle area, largely in Kent, Renton, and Everett.
