"Time for Leagues to Do Something About Players With Guns" (Abolish 2nd amendment)
Wash Post ^ | 12/1/2008 | John Feinstein

Posted on 12/01/2008 4:47:31 PM PST by GreaterSwiss

Now, let's not start screaming about the Second Amendment. To begin with, the amendment should be abolished -- a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to raise a militia for protection and to hunt for food. Clearly no one needs to raise a militia these days, and those who hunt for a living can be licensed to do so.

It would be nice if President-elect Obama had the time to focus his energies on repeal of the Second Amendment, but he first has to deal with a broken economy and the incredibly wrong-headed war started by his predecessor. What's more, the issue of gun rights causes almost as much screaming from the right as abortion rights, the irony being that those yelling the loudest about the right to life are usually those yelling almost as loud about their right to carry weapons that kill.

Why, has the threat of tyranny grown more remote in the last 219 years? I hadn't noticed.

No words can describe all that’s wrong with this man and his thought processes.

Thank G_d he’s nothing more than a simple sports commentator and has no power to enforce his will on us lesser beings.

Why are all “journalist” MORONS?
If the 2nd Adment was about hunting the very intelligent and common sense writers of the Constitutuon would have used the term hunter in it. They did not. They did not because unlike what the idiot write suggests it was not about hunting food. The entire Constitution was written to PROTECT THE PEOPLE FROM THE GOVERNMENT. There for the founders wanted the CITIZENS, not the Government’s National Guard or Army or Navy to have the RIGHT to bear arms.

You make a great point about sports that entail the use of firearms, he probably doesn’t consider those sports to be legimate ones.

Better get used to it, y’all. Childish thinkers like this feel they have a mandate following zero’s election. It’s just going to get worse.

So the NFL is responsible for the criminal miss use of hand guns, and not Plaxico Burres.

Agenda driven drivel.

Feinstein is a jackass and neither the Bill of Rights nor any part of it is going to be repealed. However, he has a point; the players have a constitutional right to bear arms but they have no constitutional right to be football players. If the NFL wanted to make it a rule that gun owners couldn't be players, they would face lawsuits but probably prevail.

As a state judge Oliver Wendell Holmes decided that a rule barring cops from politicking was constitutional for similar reasons. the cop had a right to free speech but no constitutional right to be a cop.

And, if you think you need protection wherever you go, at $7 million a year, why not hire bodyguards?

I'm assuming John Feinstein will foot the bill to hire bodyguards for all those who don't make $7 million a year.

the irony being that those yelling the loudest about the right to life are usually those yelling almost as loud about their right to carry weapons that kill.

No the irony is that the other side of the argument screams about their right to kill the most innocent and helpless at the same time they scream for the most evil to be spared.

When guns are outlawed, only the NFL player, NBA players, and rappers will have guns. Or.....

If guns were outlawed Plaxico would have probably stabbed himself in the leg with a knife. Or...

I guess this will take some heat off the DEA guy.

Let this guy piss into the wind all he wants. The possibility that the NFL and Player’s Union would agree to ban players from possessing handguns is exactly zero. There’s a fairly large overlap between the set of football fans and the set of gun owners. The NFL is fully aware of the incredible blowback which would instantly destroy their sport (or at least their personal jobs) if they even dared to seriously consider such an idea.

I say abolish the 1st amendment that gives them the freedom to publish this nonsense. /s
Sarcasm not necessarily needed. The Federalists opposed the Bill of Rights - and only agreed to it as a way to gain passage of the Constitution itself - not because they opposed the rights articulated in the Bill, but because they asserted that the listing of rights in a Bill of Rights would inevitably be less that comprehensive - and that the existence of the Bill of Rights would be used to denigrate any right not explicitly listed. And that is precisely what McCain and Feingold, with the help of President Bush and a 5-4 majority including Sandra Day O'Connor, did.

By styling themselves "the press" and their employees as "objective journalists," members of the Associated Press have conducted a century and a half long propaganda campaign to the effect that "freedom of the press" is a right exclusively of people who already own a press and are members of the Associated Press, and not a right of the people generally. In the process they have turned "the press" into an unconstitutional title of nobility.

So if we returned to status quo ante the First Amendment, we would theoretically have a better Constitution. Theoretically.

And then he would tell the ATF goons, "Get off my property before I blast holes in your face."

I knew a long time ago he was a dumbass... Most of ESPN’s reporters are very leftist (owned by ABC/Disney)....I watch a little of their NFL preview show, and Mike & Mike, thats about all....None of their commentary shows, its all left wing propaganda wrapped in the guise of sports talk...

...They hammered Rush, yet employ former athletes who have made legitimate racist remarks .....Pure Hogwash
