NOVEMBER 2001 : (US DESIGNATES YOUSSEF NADA AS A TERRORIST FINANCIER -- SEE SWITZERLAND, ITALY, LUGANO CELL / MILAN CELL, AL TAQWA, AL QAEDA) Youssef Nada, an elderly Egyptian financier who founded and ran the Al-Taqwa ("Fear of God" in Arabic) network from bases in southern Switzerland and northern Italy, was designated a terrorist financier by the Bush administration in November 2001. A U.S. Treasury official testified to Congress that Nada had provided financial assistance to Al Qaeda both before and after the 9/11 attacks.

NOVEMBER 2001 : (ITALY : BENATTIA, CHEKKOURI, REMADNA ARRESTED IN MILAN -- See MILAN CELL ) Nabil Benattia of Tunisia, Yassine Chekkouri of Morocco and Abdelhalim Hafed Remadna of Algeria, were arrested in Milan in November in connection with an investigation of the city's mosque and Islamic cultural center.
