Great Quote about the Nature of Democracies
Received via email

Posted on 12/05/2008 9:33:44 PM PST by Hildy

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.
- Alexander Fraser Tytler Lord Woodhouselee (1748-1813) Scottish judge and historian at Edinburgh University

Kershner's First Law: "When a self-governing people confer upon their government the power to take from some and give to others, the process will not stop until the last bone of the last taxpayer is picked bare.”

FYI, there is dispute as to who really said this, even though there is attribution - regardless of the source, the observation certainly seems true.

It is not only about voting to get yourself great gifts from the treasury but it also about voting yourself gifts of power and privelege in regards to law.

The leftwing promises special rights and privelege to all kinds of groups.

They openly promise to attack the rights and power of others in society.

It is not only redistribution of wealth but redistribution of power that they promise as well.

It is all a shell game that they seek to control.

As you said, whoever said it, it’s a very astute and true observation and we are seeing the fulfillment of the prediction today.

The same principle applies in the rent control areas, such as Santa Monica and San Francisco — there are more renters, so they vote themselves benefits at the expense of the “evil” landlords, who are providing them their shelter. Where would tenants be, if there were no landlords to provide them with apartments?

I think just about every wise philosopher said this, in one form or another.

Yes, it is a shell game. For the first time in my adult life, I am truly fearful of the future.

“what else can we do but trust in God and fight on.”

We can only try, trust and to learn.

And of course fight.

As much as I feel fear for what is happening to my country and to this world I still strive towards having faith. I know that it is the most important resource that I have available.

I do not want to go down without a fight!

Rome, the greatest of western civilizations, lasted a hell of a lot longer than 200 years. The Republic lasted over 500 itself.

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average Obama voter. (Tip o’the hat to Winston Churchill.)

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years.

We're different, Americans always have been. All those years of independence and freedom have embedded themselves into the national psyche. Even as this usurper speaks sweetly and charmingly, I know he is not what he seems. He hides behind his hide while any assault on him is defended with cries of racism. But I am more angry than ashamed of my reaction to this person that has highjacked my country's future and threatened its Constitution.

I don't care one whit for the Left's objections for they fall like drizzling rain upon my mind only to disappear into the nothingness of a truly righteous anger that I never would have believed had I not felt it. I have never been so angry. It is not a righteous wind that I feel but a righteous storm, uncaring for the damage it brings to the landscape of political discourse. For the first time in my life, I don't care what anyone thinks as I'm obsessed with protecting something that I never thought I would lose in my lifetime.

The Left will not listen and there is no room to compromise because that would lead to permanent defeat.

The public needs to feel fear now. They have to be warned even though it might bring them discomfort so they can react to this new harsh reality.

The Left has become a mortal enemy and needs to be fought to the last breadth and sliver of reputation because the ideals and principles that really matter that were supposed to survive beyond our deaths are dying before our eyes. The left will vilify but must be resisted.

It is time to get in their faces, not for change but to oppose it. It is time to declare war on the Left. Do not rest until their schemes are revealed and their powermad ambitions are annihilated!

This is not rhetoric, unfortunately. We are in the situation where we must fight or lose something that makes us less worthy than our ancestors who preserved something intrinsically good that is the salvation of humankind on Earth.

That's what we're fighting for against the cynical Left, bereft of faith even in the greatness of the individual American and his boundless potential that is unleashed without the constraints of tyranny. The Left would bring tyranny back that America has beaten back for generations. At its core, the Left undermines faith in America itself and undermines the future of us all.
