With sport-utility vehicles at the altar and auto workers in the pews, one of Detroit's largest churches on Sunday offered up prayers for Congress to bail out the struggling auto industry.

"We have never seen as midnight an hour as we face this week," the Rev. Charles Ellis told several thousand congregants at a rousing service at Detroit's Greater Grace Temple. "This week, lives are hanging above an abyss of uncertainty as both houses of Congress decide whether to extend a helping hand."

Local car dealerships donated three hybrid SUVs to be displayed during the service, one from each of the Big Three. A Ford Escape, Chevy Tahoe from GM and a Chrysler Aspen were parked just in front of the choir and behind the pulpit.

Ellis said he and other Detroit ministers would pray and fast until Congress voted on a bailout for Detroit's embattled automakers. He urged his congregation to do the same.

I'm afraid that I don't speak Detroit. Can somebody please explain what that phrase means? The words are in English, but they appear to be randomly strung together, like page 3 of the English section of the instructions for a new power tool.

I suppose it would have been in poor taste to have the choir sing the Joplin classic “Oh Lord, won’t you give me a Mercedes Benz”.

I think it means “It’s always darkest before the bailout.”

This is just what beeg goobermint wants — you stoopid unwashed cretins — stop praying to a non-existent Gawd.

Pray instead to your all-powerful goobermint, president, congress critters, and assorted bajillions of bureaucratic goobermint worker ants in Warshinkton, who have the power to help you or destroy you. Beg peasants!

No, I get a laying-your-troubles-on-the-altar-before-God vibe.

Oh God of Earth and Altar
Bow down and hear our cries
Our Earthly rulers falter
Our people drift and die
The walls of gold entomb us
The swords of scorn devide
Take not thy thunder from us
Take away our pride

Except instead of "Oh, Lord", it would have been "Obama".

I just think if they are going to start worshipping graven images, it should be something better than some crummy hybrid escape, tahoe or aspen.

"This week, lives are hanging above an abyss of uncertainty as both houses of Congress decide whether to extend a helping hand."

That's the attitude that got us into trouble and will keep us there. Take out "Congress". Put in "the American People". Take out "a helping hand". Put in "what this country needs for moral and civil strength and probity and for prosperity". Maybe we'd do better.

Whoever composed this prayer thinks that "Congress" can save his butt. Wrong. God can save his butt spiritually. And the people in the congregation can save theirs if they straighten out their act.

I read this and I get worried all over again about this country.
